Chandigarh take first innings lead

Chandigarh, June 20
A splendid knock of 143 off 150 balls studded with 18 fours and four sixes by Gaurav Chhabra enabled Chandigarh to take a vital 62-run first innings lead over Panchkula district in the opening match of the Haryana State Inter District League-cum-knockout (under-19) Cricket Championship being conducted by the Haryana Cricket Association at DAV School, Sector 8, here today.

Chandigarh won the toss and invited Panchkula to bat first. Mandeep Singla and Dipanshu became victims of Chandigarh medium pacer Amit Saini and Angad Singh when the scoreboard read 41 for two after 14 overs. At this stage, Shankar Nair and Kapil Pandey did the rescue act with a partnership of 98 runs for the fourth wicket. Shankar Nair contributed 69 runs in his knock consisting 11 fours. Karan Malik, too, contributed valuable 20 runs towards the end as the Panchkula innings folded up for 224 in 59.4 overs.

In reply, Chandigarh, too, did not have a good start. At a stage, when the score read 20 for 2 , Gaurav Chhabra took the ship out of trouble and scored a marathon innings of 143 from 150 balls (18X4s and 4X6s).

Rohit Singh giving him company took the score to 180 before departing. Both were involved in huge 160 runs partnership which ensured the first innings lead for Chandigarh.

Towards the end, Chandigarh garnered a crucial 62 runs first innings lead. Nipun Gupta for the visitors took four wickets for 64 whereas Kapil Pandey playing an all-rounder’s role claimed 3 for 29.

Shilpa, Ravnoor in under-14 final

Shilpa Naruka and Ravnoor Kaur entered the final of the girls’ under-14 category of the Hot Weather Tennis Tournament being played at CLTA complex here. They defeated their respective opponents Bhavika Wadhawan (6-0, 6-4) and Arpan Chahal (6-2, 6-3) in the semifinals today.

Men’s doubles (quarterfinals): Lalit Tandon/Tushar Sharma b Karan Golmei/A.Deepak, 6-4, 6-2; Vijayant Malik/Yogesh Phogat bt Nikhil Hooda/Amrinder Singh, 6-1, 6-4.

4 CHA players for Youth Asia Cup

Chandigarh, June 20
Four hockey players belonging to Chandigarh Hockey Academy, Sector 42, have been selected in the final team to participate in the forthcoming under 18 boys Youth Asia Cup. The tournament is scheduled to be held at New Delhi from June 21 to July 14 and from July 23 to 30 at Mumbai.

All four players (u- 18) - Harjit Singh, Rupinder Pal Singh, Simranjeet Singh, and Dharamvir Singh were selected on the basis of their performance during the coaching camp held at Mahindra Stadium, Mumbai from May 18 to June 7.

Chemist shops raided

Panchkula, June 20
To curb illegal sale of drugs, medicines and other equipments by the chemists in the city, a team of the Haryana Health Department today conducted surprise raids on over a dozen chemist shops, including that of a chemist shop on General Hospital, Sector 6, premises.

A team comprising two drug controllers G.L. Singal and R.K. Chugh, drug licencing authority officer O.P. Aggarwal and three drug inspectors launched the operation early in the morning. TNS
