Teachers flay Jakhar
: The Punjab State Recognised Aided Schools Teachers Union on Tuesday urged the civil administration to restrain Mr Jaspinder Singh Jakhar, president of the managing committee of the Singh Sabha Kanya Pathshala (senior secondary), from harassing the school Principal Ms Rajwinder Kaur. She is the president of the local unit of the union . At a meeting here Mr Prem Phutela, district president, and others condemned Mr Jakhar for misbehaving with the principal. Mr Jakhar is also the secretary of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee. Mr Jakhar, however, refuted the allegations.

HOSHIARPUR
BJP protest
: BJP workers on Monday submitted memorandums against the PLPA Act in kandi areas. A party press note stated that these were submitted to the authorities in Hoshiarpur, Dasuya, Mukerian, Anandpur sahib and Mohali sub-division. In Hoshiarpur, villagers led by state party president Avinash Rai Khanna submitted a memorandum to the ADC.

Earrings snatched: Jasbir Singh of Leelan Megh Singh village was booked on charges of snatching earrings from Vijay Laxmi in Jagraon. The police has registered a case under Section 356 of the IPC.

Liquor seized: Pritam Singh of Baniawal village was arrested by the Humbran police for possessing 15,000 ml of illicit liquor. A case under the Excise Act has been registered.

Poppy husk seized: The Dakha police has arrested Makhan Singh of Dakha and seized 52 kg of poppy husk from his possession. His two accomplices — Karnail Singh and Charno — managed to flee. The police has booked the trio under the NDPS Act.

New DSP: Mr Paramjit Singh Goraya has taken over as DSP (City) here in place of Mr Gurjit Singh Romana. Addressing mediapersons on Wednesday, he sought their cooperation in curbing crime.

No salary: Mr Tejinder Singh Nunny, president, Khand Mill Bachao Action Committee, has blamed the Punjab Government for not releasing the salary of employees of Jagraon Cooperative Sugar Mill for the past 11 months. He warned the government to release the salary within seven days or face legal action.

Man held
: A man was held by the police team of from Division Number 3 along with a stolen motorcycle here on Tuesday. Vijay Kumar alias Jaswinder, a resident of Jangla Bhawani in Pathankot, has been accused of stealing the motorcycle from one Ramesh Kumar of the same area.

Low NPA: The Oriental Bank of Commerce had registered a net NPA of .49 per cent till March this year, one of the lowest among the banking industry, General Manager of the bank, Mr D. G. Saxena said here on Wednesday. He added that the bank planned to introduce Internet and mobile banking soon.

LECTURE: An extension lecture on “Personality development” was organised at the Gujranwala Guru Nanak Institute of Vocational Studies here on Wednesday. Ms Aditi Satiza, a local psychologist, was the chief speaker.

CPI, CPM protest
: Activists of the district units of the CPI and the CPM took out a protest march and blocked traffic here at Chandigarh Chowk on Tuesday to protest against the recent hike in petrol and diesel prices. Mr Kapoor Singh Jadli, Mr Balbir Singh Jadla, Mr Ram Singh Nurpuri, Mr Mahan Singh Rouri and Mr Rakesh Nayyar, criticised the UPA government for the hike in prices.

Career for nurses: Ms Ann Woodgyer from New Zealand visited the Sandhu Institute of Nursing, Mahalonon, on Monday. She interacted with the staff and students and made them aware of employment avenues for nurses in New Zealand.

BJP elections
: In a scheduled programme of the BJP’s organisational elections in various states including Punjab, the BJP’s All India Returning Officer, Mr O.P. Kohli, on Wednesday appointed Punjab BJP Vice-President Chaudhary Swarna Ram as the Returning Officer for the party’s elections. The election process would begin after completion of the membership drive by July 31. Elections for the State President’s post would be held by October 31.

Demand
: The Secretary of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC), Mr Parminder Mehta, has urged the AICC President, Ms Sonia Gandhi, and the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, to provide financial help to families of terror victims in Punjab and J&K. The PPCC President, Mr Shamsher Singh Dullo, had made a similar demand.

3 booked for firing
: Three youths fired in the air outside the DP Residency Hotel on Pathankot-Madhopur road on Monday night. The three youths from Pathankot are Sushil Mahajan, Ajit Mahajan and Gullu. They and two others were drinking at the hotel bar when they had an altercation with the dance troupe there.

FUNCTION: A bhandara was arranged at Balion village, 2 km from here, by Baba Simran Dass, sewadar of Shaheedan Da Akharra, on Tuesday which was largely attended by devotees of Baba Simran Dass.

Yamunanagar
Measures to check flood
: The Irrigation Department has erected two bed bars at a cost of Rs 3.56 crore on the Yamuna river along Mandewala village with an aim of protecting 18 villages of Chhachhrouli block . Mr Dalbir Singh, Superintending Engineer, said that work was almost complete and it would save the villages from floods during monsoons. The department has also dug a creek in the river near Mali Majra village to check the river water entering villages.

Solar lights: The Shivalik Development Trust gave solar lights to 20 BPL families of Chikken village of Chachhrouli block on Tuesday. Mr O.P Lohan, Additional Deputy Commissioner, said that the families were given the lights for Rs 197 only and the remaining Rs 1,500 (cost of one light is Rs 1,697) was born by the trust for each light. He further said that 50 dish-type solar cookers would be given in the schools and villages of the Shivalik area.
