Farmers’ plea to rectify mistake in grant of relief
Our Correspondent

Mandi Ahmedgarh, June 4
Three brothers belonging to Malikpur Jandali Khurad village have urged the authorities to issue a cheque for compensation on account of damage caused to their paddy crop due to hailstorm last year. A clerical mistake in revenue record, which has since been rectified, had resulted in the issuance of a cheque in favour of the deceased father of the claimants.

Dr Indu, SDM Malerkotla, said the grievance of the claimants would be redressed as soon as their representation reached her office.

According to Mr Amarjit Singh, a farmer of Malikpur Jandali Khurad village in Sangrur district, he along with his brothers— Ranjit Singh and Gurcharan Singh— had not been paid compensation for the damage caused to paddy crop in their fields measuring 12.5 bigha. ‘‘Though the team of revenue officials, acting under advice of Dr Indu had approved a compensation of Rs 7,000, the authorities at the local Municipal Office had issued a cheque in favour of our deceased father Chanan Singh who had died in 1983,’’ said Amarjit Singh while talking to the Ludhiana Tribune.

Perusal of records showed that Joint Sub Registrar, Ahmedgarh, on the receipt of application on January 7, 2006, had directed his staff to submit a report in connection with the ownership of the land. The halqa patwari had reported then that Amarjit Singh, Gurcharan Singh and Ranjit Singh were the owners of land according to zamabandi 2003-2004.

‘‘Though the Joint Sub Registrar had directed the disbursement officer to issue cheque in our favour on February 17, the staff concerned has been putting us off on one or the other excuse. Now when they have shown their inability to issue a fresh cheque we are left with no option but to knock at the doors of senior officers,’’ said Mr Amarjit Singh.

However, Dr Indu maintained that the victim, instead of shuttling between offices should have brought the matter to her notice immediately. ‘‘I will ensure that the claimants get their right immediately,’’ she said.
