75,000 breast cancer cases every year in country
Mohali, June 3 Dr Bedi claims to have pioneered the usage of herceptin in North India. In fact, herceptin has been opened for use for stage I and II patients in Europe only this week, while Dr Bedi, after approval from the USA, has been successfully using it for quite some time on a majority of his breast cancer patients with a very high rate of success. Explaining how herceptin works, Dr Bedi said: “Studies conducted in the USA and Europe, focused on patients with a gene mutation known as HER2-positive, which made their breast cancers aggressive and difficult to treat. The chances were that one-thirds of these cases would suffer a relapse and succumb to the cancer. It is in such cases where herceptin was very useful. Herceptin, an anti-body, attaches itself to the HER2 gene on tumours, inhibiting the tumour’s ability to grow. The drug shows the best response in women who have early-stage HER2-positive breast cancer, meaning that it has not spread from their breast and lymph nodes. The drug needs to be taken for a year by the patient,” Dr Bedi added. Talking about breast cancer in India, Dr Bedi said “Breast Cancer has daunting figures in the country with almost 75,000 new cases every year. Every 13 minutes, breast cancer claims a life in India. Herceptin is an expensive drug and can cost upto Rs 1.5 lakh every month, but atleast it is available to save some precious lives. Progressively, the prices are also likely to come down over the years,” he added. |
