Geelani detained
Jammu, June 2 Mr Geelani told this correspondent over the telephone that he, along with his supporters, was detained by policemen led by an officer of the SP rank at Chingus, about 90 km from here, while he was heading for Rajouri. He said he was kept in the police station for about seven hours before he was escorted to Rajouri by the police. Mr Geelani, who had left for Rajouri early this morning from here, said he was detained by the police until the people who had gathered in large numbers in the mosque dispersed. He accused the government of functioning in a “dictatorial” manner and not allowing him to meet the people. He said that while on one hand the government had initiated the peace process in Kashmir, on the other, his democratic rights were being trampled. |

Srinagar, June 2 An Army patrol with sniffer dogs pressed the alarm button this morning when one of the dogs signalled planting of an improvised explosive device on the main road, forcing the closure of the busy road, they said. A bomb disposal squad was summoned and after a search lasting almost seven hours, no explosive substance was detected, they said. The movement of traffic on the road resumed at 4 pm. Power supply, which was snapped as a precautionary measure as the IED was suspected to have been planted near an electricity transmission line, was also restored, the officials said. The

Srinagar, June 2 Giving several directions on a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by the Kashmir Bar Association (KBA), a Division Bench, comprising Mr Justice Hakeem Imtiyaz Hussain and Mr Justice Bashir Ahmed Kirmani, expresed unhappiness over the slow speed of the CBI in investigating the scandal. The court asked the CBI Director to be present in person on the next date of hearing in the case on June 6 and explain the slow pace of investigations into the sex racket and suggest measures to expedite the probe even as some fresh material had also come on record in the case. The Central Government advocate was directed to facilitate the personal appearance of the CBI Director on the next date of hearing. It was for the first time today that an in-camera trial in the case was held. The court also came down heavily on the CBI for its failure to record full statement of the alleged kingpin in the sex racket, Sabeena, and directed the premier investigating agency to complete it by the next date of hearing. The bench also formed a commission of two lawyers and a lady doctor, who will be nominated by the Director, Health Services, Kashmir, to examine Yasmeena, one of the victims of the sex racket, and report about her condition to the court by the next date of hearing in the case. — UNI |
