Complex knee replacement at Apollo Hospitals
Our Correspondent

Ludhiana, May 22
A constrained condylar unlinked type of knee replacement was done at SPS Apollo Hospitals here by Dr Harpreet S. Gill, consultant Orthopaedic surgeon.
According to Dr Gill, the patient was presented with inability to bear weight on the leg for about two months. Whenever she attempted to put weight, her knee joint would go inward and strike the opposite knee. Because of this deformity and resulting pain, she was unable to walk and remained confined to wheelchair.

Dr Gill said normally due to osteoarthritis, there was outward bowing of leg. However, in this case, it was inward bowing of the leg and also the ligaments, which stabilised the knee, were lax or loose. Hence this special type of knee replacement had to be done. This type of knee implant was normally used for the revision knee replacement surgery (in those cases where knee replacement had failed or giving problems).

Commenting further, Dr Gill said such constraint implants were needed when soft tissues and ligaments around the knee could not handle the stress and load as the soft tissues might be lax or loose leading to joint instability. "Each case must be decided carefully. The amount of instability present, type of knee deformity, and other patient factors should be considered. The aim of this surgery is to ensure a pain-free, stable knee in normal anatomical alignment", he added.
