Karate workshop at DAV School
Chandigarh, May 22 The workshop was held under the supervision of Mr Sukhjeevan Sharma, National Instructor, 2 nd Degree Black Belt in taekwondo and karate. Mr Sharma gave practical lessons in self- defence techniques like kicking techniques (push, round, hammer and back kick); Punching techniques (single, double, face and stomach attack), besides breaking techniques (ice and wood breaking). |
Downpour plays spoilsport
Chandigarh, May 22 St. John’s won the toss and elected to bat first. A brilliant century by Manan Vohra (125 n.o) and a half century by Karan Goyal (55 no) helped the academy reach a score of 197 runs in 29.4 overs, when the downpour started. Because of the wet ground conditions, the match was abandoned. Both teams were awarded 2 points each. The afternoon match between Mohali-eleven and St. Anne’s was also abandoned. Tomorrow’s fixtures: St. John’s Cricket Academy (B) vs St Soldier’s Cricket Academy and St. Anne’s vs St John’s Cricket Academy (A). |
Probables for karate tourney
Ambala, May 22 Mr Hemant Sharma, selection coordinator, said the selected candidates would face further trials at Mumbai. The probables selected for South Asian games are Arun Kumar Tevatia (kumitte) under 50 kg, Randhesh Yadav (kumitte) under 55 kg, Rohit Verma (kummitte) under 60 kg, Hemant Sharma (kumitte) under 70 kg. Mahender Kaur (above 57 kg) has been selected for women team. The candidates selected for junior and cadets championship are Pardeep Kumar (kumitte and kata) under 60 kg, Arun Kumar Tevatia (kumitte) under 50 kg and Rohit Verma (kumitte and kata) under 60 kg. The selection committee comprised Mr Hemant Sharma, Mr Santosh K. Aggarwal, Mr Shiv Panchal and Mr Jai Prakash. |
Six firms selected for developing film city
Chandigarh, May 22 The Multimedia-cum-Film City will be one of its kind in the country, with a multimedia and animation study-cum-training centre and digital studios for doing high-end work in film production. Fourteen companies had applied for developing the film city and the eligibility criterion was strict. It required that the companies must possess the capacity to invest Rs 50 crore in the first year and Rs 100 crore within three years. They should have a prior tie-up with industry experts or companies in the respective medias. The six companies selected are KRBL Limited in joint venture with Greenfield Ventures Limited; DLF Universal Limited in tie-up with Graffitti Multimedia and Team Work Films; Parsvnath Developers Limited in tie-up with Satish Kaushik-promoted Real Good Films; Fun Multiplex Private Limited of the Zee Group in tie-up with Subhash Ghai-promoted company Mukta Arts; Unitech Limited in tie-up with Ashok P. Singh, Aamir Raze Hussain and Turner International; and EMMAR MGF in tie-up with Village Road Show of the USA and BR Films. |
Augmentation of streetlights okayed
Chandigarh, May 22 The meeting was chaired by Ms Geeta Rani, Chairman, electricity committee, here today. The committee approved various agendas, including the augmentation of streetlights behind Pankaj Hotel to the petrol pump in Sector 22-A, behind Piccadily Chowk, Sector 22-B, behind Chawla Chicken, Sector 22-C, behind Shimla Flour Mill, Sector 22-C, behind Sunbeam Hotel, Sector 22-B and light arrangements in Bhai Gulistan, Sector 25. The meeting passed items providing streetlights on the road along the new Dashera ground adjoining Shivalik Garden, Mani Majra, the augmentation of streetlights on the bridge and Mehfil road in Sector 17, from Lyons Restaurant crossing in Sector 17, to the Punjab and Haryana Secretariat, Sector 1, V-5 road, Sector 44-A and B, 44-C and D, V-5 road, Sector 42-A and B, 42-C and D, behind showrooms in Sector 8-D market, and Sector 9-D, V-4 road, Sector 43. It also approved the revised estimate for the renovation and upgradation of musical fountain at Terraced Garden, Sector 33, the rough cost estimate for the augmentation of streetlights on the Indian Express road in Industrial Area, Phase-I, and the rough cost estimate for providing slow sequencing fountain in Mini Rose Garden, Sector 24, etc. |
