Microsoft offers free software to students

Microsoft Corporation has launched a free tool for India’s growing student and technology enthusiast community — the Visual Studio 2005 Express Editions. Visual Studio 2005 Express Editions are light-weight, easy-to-use and easy-to-learn offerings that enable novices to quickly develop dynamic Web applications and Windows applications.

By offering this software free in India, Microsoft proposes to encourage the large community of software enthusiasts and students, including beginning Windows developers, hobbyists, Web developers, amateur game developers and even hardware developers, to experiment with software development.

According to Ms Sheila Gulati, Director — Developer and Platform Evangelism, Microsoft India, the Visual Studio 2005 Express Editions can be downloaded from http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/default.aspx. In addition, to address bandwidth issues in India, Microsoft is giving out CDs of Visual Studio Express Editions. The CD is available to the first 20,000 developers that register on the site — www.vsexpress.in  and will be shipped to them free of cost.

“Software has the capability to change lives. We believe that it is important to put the power of software into the hands of young and upcoming developers, and that is the reason for making Visual Studio 2005 Express Editions available free of charge,” said Ms Gulati.

She further added: “The free availability of the Visual Studio Express Editions will provide the fast growing student, hobbyist developer and novice professional developer communities the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the rich functionality of a development suite used the world over. This also gives them the chance to experiment with cutting edge technologies and learn new skills at an early age.”

College celebrates annual function

Chandigarh, May 20
The Dev Samaj College of Education, Chandigarh, celebrated its annual prize distribution function here today. The Chairperson, Dev Samaj, Kumari Satyawati, was the chief guest.

Principal Satinder Dhillon read out the college report. Academic and non-academic prizes were given away to students for their performances.

All round best were: Navdeep Kaur and Deepika Moar. The others who got prizes included Navdeep, Amisha, Amardeep Kaur, Gurparveen Kaur, Parul, Harpreet, Riya, Priyanka, Ranjeeta, Amardeep Kaur, Deepti James, Neha Goel, Nimisha, Neha Goel, Amritpal Kaur, Pooja S. Prakash, Hetal Ben Patel and Navdeep.

Apart from this, 50 students were given prizes for their performances in individual subjects. Special prizes were given to students for moral education.

Making students perfect in tying turban

Mohali, May 20
A turban-tying competition was held at the boys hostel of the local Shivalik Public School today. Nearly 25 students from Classes VII to XI took part in it. The competition was sponsored by the school to encourage Sikh boys to imbibe the spirit of pride in tying smart turban as part of their outfit.

Participants were allotted 15 minutes to tie their turbans. Mr Sarbjit Singh, Mr Jaspal Singh, Mr Harneet Singh and Mr Navneet Singh from Guru Gobind Singh Study Circle were the judges for the competition. The following are the results: Sharanjit Singh 1; Naveet Singh 2; and Rasjeet Singh 3. Gurjot Singh, Gurpreet Singh and Gurkaran Singh got the consolation prizes. Director-Principal of the school D.S. Bedi encouraged the students to follow the tradition in true spirit and take pride in their outfit and head gear.

Meanwhile, it was yet another moment of hilarity for the tiny tots of Gian Jyoti Public School when the nursery and pre-nursery students defied the summer heat to take plunge into the small swimming pool on the school campus, thus making the activity day meaningful and enjoyable.

Teachers and senior students of the school enjoyed the water play of the kids.

Ms Ranjeet Bedi, Principal of the school, said the main aim of the day was to make the students learn even while at play. She even encouraged the nursery and pre-nursery students to take part in the water play.

Cabinet initiation at Mount Carmel

Chandigarh, May 20
A ceremony of school cabinet initiation and an inter house fancy dress competition was organised by Mount Carmel School, Sector 47-B, today at LECMA, 3 BRD. Dr Archana R. Singh, Reader at Panjab University, was the chief guest.

The Principal administered the oath of office to student members of the cabinet. A fancy dress competition was also organised in which students from classes KG to X participated.

564 cases settled at Lok Adalat

Chandigarh, May 20
Cases relating to motor accident claims, matrimonial disputes, civil and criminal, rent and summary challans were taken up at a special Lok Adalat organised by the Chandigarh State Legal Services Authority at the district courts here today. The Lok Adalat was held under the aegis of Mr Justice Amar Dutt, Executive Chairman of the Authority.

A total of 14 Benches were constituted for taking up the cases. Mr B.S. Mehandiratta, District and Sessions Judge-cum- Chairman of the District Legal Services Authority, said 564 cases were disposed of.

Mr Neerja Kulwant Kalson, Chief Judicial Magistrate, said the next Lok Adalat would be held on August 26.
