Jeweller, woman go missing from shop

In an intriguing case of theft and disappearance, a jeweller and his woman employee were allegedly found missing along with most of the jewellery in the shop at the Ghumar Mandi market this morning.

He prepared fake land record, still gets impunity

In the absence of the owners of a piece of land worth Rs 50 lakh, a patwari allegedly connived with members of an agrarian family and prepared a fake account in their favour during a zamabandi session 2001-02.

Farmers block traffic against land acquisition
Ludhiana, May 12
Hundreds of farmers today staged a protest demonstration and blocked the Ludhiana-Bathinda road for a couple of hours. They were protesting against the proposal of the Punjab Government's move to acquire land in Halwara and surrounding villages for the international airport.

14 injured in clash over water

Water shortage today led to a bloody clash in Shiv Colony under the Division No. 6 police station leaving at least 14 persons, including four women, injured. They were admitted to the Civil Hospital here.

Residents seek uninterrupted water supply
Ludhiana, May 12
Residents of Urban Vihar, Jwaddi, are reeling under the shortage of drinking water for the past one week. Despite various representations to the Municipal Corporation authorities, the water supply to the area has not been restored. The area councillor has, however, made arrangements of water tankers to supply water to the area.

Safai workers demand regularisation
Ludhiana, May 12
About 150 safai workers of Christian Medical College and Hospital (CMCH), who have been working in the hospital for more than 10 years now, have demanded regularisation of jobs. A delegation of the safai workers under the leadership of Mr Vijay Danav and Mr Laxman Dravid met the Director, Mr John Pramod, here today.

Bhoomi pujan for seniors’ home

The Rotary Club of Ludhiana (North) organised bhoomi pujan for the proposed senior citizens home in the B block of Rajguru Nagar here yesterday. The Punjab Government through the Improvement Trust has given a plot of 2,000 yards for the Senior Citizens Home.

The Federation of Punjab Small Industries Associations has expressed happiness that the Punjab State Electricity Regulatory Commission (PSERC) did not allow the Punjab State Electricity Board (PSEB) to increase power tariff in the state.

BSNL introduces broadband package

Buoyed over the enthusiastic response to its broadband services launched in the mega city a couple a months ago, the telecom giant Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has launched a new unlimited plan - UL 900 which will be available to the home plan segment with immediate effect.

PAU launches save environment campaign
Ludhiana, May 12
Early transplanting of paddy, burning of wheat straw and excessive use of chemical fertiliser/pesticides are few areas of concern that demand apt attention by all to keep environment healthy. With this concern in mind, PAU Department of Extension Education launched an awareness campaign in Purian and Issewal villages in Ludhiana district.

Workshop on nature cure, yoga

Ludhiana, May 12
A one-day workshop on nature cure, yoga and diet therapy was held at DD Jain Memorial College for Women on the fifth day of 10 days NSS camp, being organised by the NSS units of the college. A team led by Mr S.R.Mittal from the Nature Cure Education Trust, visited the college. Mr Krishan Lal Gupta, in charge Ram Dev Yog Sansthan, Mr Ved Prakash Gupta, yoga expert and Mr Katkar were there to educate the students on yoga.

Mother’s Day celebrated

Mother’s Touch kindergarten today celebrated Mother’s Day. Tiny tots put up a little show for their mothers. Right from welcoming them to dancing for them was all done by the students. They also recited a rhyme specially written by teachers for the occasion.

6-year-old gets new lease of life
Ludhiana, May 12

“God is great and has blessed our child with a new lease of life,” said Bishnu and Sangita of the Ram Nagar locality at Bahmian Kalan village, near Ludhiana, as they take their healthy son Bikesh home from Ludhiana Mediciti, where the six-year-old boy underwent a complex open-heart surgery, performed by Dr Harinder Singh Bedi, Director and Chairman, Cardiac Sciences.

Patiala, Amritsar begin campaign with wins
Ludhiana, May 12
Patiala and Amritsar teams began their campaign with wins in the inaugural edition of the Punjab State Inter-District Twenty Twenty Cricket Tournament which started at the Punjab Agricultural University ground here today. Patiala defeated Kapurthala by 15 runs while Amritsar routed Faridkot by nine wickets.
