Nurses remember Florence Nightingale
Chandigarh, May 12 At the inaugural function organised by the Department of Nursing, Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, the Director-Principal, Dr
S.M. Swami, urged the nurses to adopt the ideals of Florence Nightingale. In tune with the theme for the year, he said efforts were on to have an ideal nurse-patient ratio in the hospital for providing better and improved patient care. The Nursing Superintendent, Ms Prakash Devi, said Florence Nightingale was recognised for establishing the principle of nursing education and practices. Though nursing had widened in scope, the profession had successfully retained the reputation of care and sacrifice. Explaining the meaning of this year’s theme, she said it meant appropriate number of staff with a suitable mix of skill level, available at all times to make sure patient care needs were met and hazard-free working conditions were maintained. She maintained that accountability was difficult when there was inadequate supply of healthcare personnel such as nurses. Giving details of the week-long celebrations which will end on May 18, the Nursing Superintendent stated that during the week, the staff would give nursing tips in the various OPDs of the hospital and distribute clothes among the poor in the slum areas. At the General Hospital, Sector 16, a similar programme was organised where Florence Nightingale’s contribution to society was recalled by the speakers. The week-long celebration was inaugurated by Dr G. Dewan, Deputy Medical Superintendent of the hospital, by lighting the traditional lamp. |
‘Nurses should get world-class training’
Mohali, May 12 This was stated by Dr M.S. Toor, Civil Surgeon, Mohali, at a valedictory function organised at the Fortis Hospital in connection the “nurses week” celebrations here today. Each year, to commemorate the birth anniversary of the Lady with the Lamp, Florence Nightingale. Prizes are given out in various categories to nurses in recognition of exemplary work done by them. This years awards were presented by Dr Toor. During the week, various activities like panel discussions, role-play competition, medical knowledge tests, poster-making competition, medical camp, etc were held on the theme “safe staffing saves lives”. Mr Ashish Bhatia, COO, Fortis Hospital, said International Nurses’ Day was celebrated across the globe to draw our attention to one of the noblest professions in the world. A profession that taught only to give selflessly, untiringly, unconditionally and most of all, caringly. |
Northwest Sector cagers win title
Chandigarh, May 12 The closing ceremony was presided over by Mr D.P. Sinha, Additional DGP, CRPF (North Zone, Chandigarh) and the prizes were given by Ms D.P. Sinha. The prominent scorers for the winners were Dalbir Singh 32, Kartar 16 and Satish 11, while Sanjay Singh 22, Sanjay Mohanty 21 and Ashfaq Ahmed 15 were the main contributors for the losers. In the volleyball event, Southern Sector (Hyderabad) secured the first position and Manipur and Nagaland sector came second. They were followed by teams of Northwest Sector (Chandigarh) and Northeast Sector (Shillong). Southern Sector (Hyderabad) grabbed the Kabaddi title, while Northern Sector (Delhi) came second. Northwest Sector (Chandigarh) got the third place. In the handball event, Western Sector went home with the first position, followed by Southern Sector. Northern Sector (Delhi) and Northwest Sector (Chandigarh) had to contend with the third and the fourth places, respectively. |
Mohini wins rope-climbing contest
Panchkula, May 12 It was fascinated to see the participants climbing the rope of 20-feet high without touching feet to it. Equally fantastic was the gymnastic pole-hanging event in which Gurmail Singh was adjudged the winner clocking 2 minutes 20 seconds. The festival was inaugurated by Captain Ajay Yadav, Revenue Minister, Haryana. The festival is being conducted under the patronage of Kanwar Amitabh Chandel, vice-president, Youth Congress, Haryana. "With this events, our aim is to motivate the youth and children to shun the television and videogames and take to more physical activities", told Amitabh Chandel, who had been playing a number of national and international tennis events. The other results: Rope climbing : Mohini (7.90) 1, Udham Singh (7.91 sec) 2, Gurvinder Singh (8.22 sec) 3. Gymnastic pole hanging: Gurmail Singh (2 min 20 sec) 1, Babu Ram (2.14 sec) 2, Harmeet Singh (2.12 sec) 3. |
