Indian teaching methods impress Pak teacher
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, May 12
Mohammad Anwar, general secretary, Kot Radha Kishen Development Trust, Kasur, Pakistan, is taken in by the form of puppetry and theatre used to teach students in the city.

He is also surprised by the critical approach used in teaching— one of the few things which he hopes to implement when he gets back to his school— The Learning School—in Kasur, Pakistan.

Anwar is a part of a delegation of teachers which has come to the city as part of ‘Aao Dosti Karein’ (working together to build a community of responsive educator), an innovative initiative taken by Dev Samaj College for Women, Sector 36, Chandigarh, which has brought together teachers from Kasur.

While conversing with him one learns that Pakistan as a society has yet to grow in other ways and come out of problems all rural areas it seems face.

“Co-education is still not promoted. After Class V, girls and boys can't study together though they are in the same compound, they are in different classes.”

However, things, he feels, are changing for the better. Children are coming to study.

“Initially, when we started our school we had to go to each house and ask students to come, however, things are changing now. We now have a strength of 700 students,” he informs.

While he feels that teething problems exist, he is hopeful that the workshop will help teach them ways to over come them.

The four-day workshop commenced here on Tuesday. The workshop has been specially designed for the delegates and focuses on teaching methodologies and alternated education system.

Visits to St Johns School and Small Wonder School are also planned.

Fresh challan against Bhullar
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, May 12
After dropping charges under TADA against Devinder Singh Bhullar by the previous District and Sessions Judge, the police today provided a copy of the fresh challan against the accused.

In the challan, the police had added Sections 302, 307, 427, 216 and 120 B of the IPC against Bhullar, Manjeet Singh, Man Mohan, Navneet and Gurjant Singh. Gurjant Singh and Navneet have died.

In 1991, the accused had been booked for a conspiracy to kill former SSP Sumedh Singh Saini, in a bomb blast targeting his police convoy in Sector 17. They had been booked for murder under TADA. In February this year, the District and Sessions judge M.M.S. Bedi held that the charges under TADA were not maintainable.

After charges under TADA were not maintainable, the case has to be committed to a designated court to record the evidence on other sections against the accused. Though the SSP had escaped the blast, four police personnel accompanying him were killed.

Then the police had alleged that that Bhullar, along with others, had hatched the conspiracy at the residence of Partap Singh and Gursharan Kaur in SAS Nagar. Pratap Singh and Gursharan Kaur were released by the court on bail whereas Bhullar is in Tihar jail.

A former engineering professor, Bhullar already faces death penalty awarded by the Delhi High Court and confirmed by the Supreme Court in the 1993 Delhi bomb blast case, in which the then Indian Youth Congress leader, M.S. Bitta, was injured.
