Cash looted
: Two unidentified motor cycle-borne youth ran away after snatching a bag containing Rs 1.86 lakh from two persons in front of Bank of India’s branch near Sangam cinema in broad daylight here on Tuesday. According to sources in the police, Jagdev Singh and Sukhwinder Singh, employees of a filling station, had gone to deposit the amount in the bank. However, as soon as they reached the place the accused coming from behind snatched the bag and run away.

BATALA
One dead
: As per police sources, Naresh Kumar, head constable, of Tarn Taran, died on the spot while his companion Jagir Singh was admitted to a hospital with serious injuries when their car was involved in an accident. The accident took place near Ghasitpura village on the Batala-Amritsar road and the car No. PB-02-5165 was going towards Amritsar. The police has registered a case U/S 304/279 IPC. The dead body of the deceased was handed over to the relatives on Tuesday.

Liquor claims man’s life
: NRI Harpal Singh, alias Bittu of Sherpur, died due to excessive drinking at his house on Tuesday. According to Mrs Lakhwinder Kaur, mother of the deceased, Harpal Singh was working in Dubai where he became a drunkard. After returning from Dubai, he continued with his habit. He consumed excessive liquor due to which he died.

Black marketing
: The police on Thursday arrested one Mahesh Kapur alias Bittu, a resident of Mathura Nagar, for allegedly selling kerosene in the black market. Four drums of kerosene were recovered from his shop in the Chotta Saipur area. The kerosene, meant for ration card holders at subsidised rates, was sold off to migrant labourers after mixing it with white powder and adding blue colour.

Theft averted
: The local police on Thursday claimed to arrest two minor youths for allegedly decamping with Rs 15 lakh from the car here. The police said one Puran Singh and one Jaswant Singh, residents of Sangowal village had withdrawn the amount from the Mall Road branch of the State Bank of Patiala around 11 am. As soon as they sat in their car, a boy started throwing stones on the windscreen. As Puran Singh went after the him, another boy picked the bag of cash from the car and ran away but soon threw away. Later, one of the accused was nabbed by Head Constable Resham Singh and Constable Surjit Singh.

TARN TARAN
Two arrested
: Two thieves identified as Inderjit Singh and Baljit Singh, responsible for the theft in a house of the local Deep Avenue made on May 1, have been arrested. Cash worth Rs 37,000 and jewellery worth Rs 2 lakh was stolen in broad daylight. A case has been registered. Police sources said that besides jewellery 16 gents and lady suits have been recovered.

Seminar: As many as 37 students of ITI College, Kalka at Bitna took part in a seminar on welding organised at Goyal Arc in Industrial Area-I here on Wednesday. The students were shown various processes in the manufacturing of welding electrodes and MIG/MAG welding wire along with wire drawing, wire cutting, hydraulic pressure press to the packing stage. Mr Sushil Goyal and Mr Sanjay Goel, Directors of Goyal Arc explained to students about effects, uses and properties of various chemical processes used in the manufacture of welding electrodes and MIG Wires.

Elected: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Chandigarh Wholesale Cloth Merchants Association: president—Mr Charanjiv Singh; senior vice-president—Mr Gurinder Singh; vice-presidents—Mr Gursharan Batra and Naveen Chabra.
