GMCH contract staff threaten stir
Chandigarh, May 11 The employees, including lab technicians, lab attendants, ward attendants, social workers and sweepers, maintained that their salaries were abysmally low while the regular staff at the hospital was earning almost thrice then them. The employees said some of them had been working at their present positions since the past eight years and were still being discriminated against in terms of payment.

Northwest Sector cagers slam Northeast Sector
Chandigarh, May 11 The leading scorer for the winners was Suresh Kumar (19). In the second semifinal, Northern Sector, Delhi, (NSD) beat Southern Sector (Hyderabad) by 73-58. Sanjay Mohanty (27) of NSD was the highest
scorer followed by his teammates Sanjay Singh and Ashfaq Ahmed (15 each). For losers, B. S. Vishwanath and Nishi Kant scored 12 points each. The final match will be played tomorrow at

DAV outplays govt school in cricket tourney
Chandigarh, May 11 DAV won the toss and elected to bat first. They made 151 runs for the loss of four wickets in the 20-over match, whereas the government school managed to score just 112 runs for 9 wickets in the allotted overs. DAV's Rohit Mittal was the highest scorer for the day with an unbeaten 52 followed by Pawan with 33 runs. Ishleen took 3 wickets conceding just 25 runs. Three teams are participating in the series, including DAV Shalimar Cricket Academy, Government school, Sector 35, and Vivek High Asian Cricket Academy. The series is being organised by the Chandigarh Blues, affiliated with the Chandigarh Cricket Association. |
DC inaugurates skating rink
Chandigarh, May 11 The programme commenced with a welcome song by the toddlers of the school. Samira and Simrat students of Class XI read out the annual report of the school. Events like speed skating and musical ballet were displayed by the students. Babanpreet and Sukhpreet were given medals for bringing laurels to the school in the inter-school roller hawks skating championships. |
Academy to groom budding cricketers soon
Chandigarh, May 11 In the academy, we will select around 20 players, in the age groups of 8 to 10, 10 to 12 and 12 to 14. The stress will be on the basics, said Azad, who has produced a number of Test cricket and international stars, including Kapil Dev Nikhanj, Yograj Singh, Chetan Sharma and Ashok Malhotra. Elaborating on the features of the academy, Azad said It will run on modern and scientific lines by using audio-video devices. Moreover, different kind of practice pitches (fast, slow, turning and varying bounce) will be laid so that the players can adjust his game as the situation demands. Azad, who is the Chairman of the Coaching Committee of the Punjab Cricket Association as well as a Selector, said: I will be assisted by highly qualified and dedicated coaches. Present and past Test cricketers and sports experts will be sharing their knowledge with the budding and upcoming cricketers from time to time. In the academy, boarding and lodging facility will be provided to the outstation trainees. The academy will be run under the aegis of the Dronacharya Sports Promoters Association and will be known as D.P. Azad Cricket Academy. Azad also thanked the St Stephen's Principal, Mr Harold Carver, for offering all facilities to establish the academy. |
U-19 cricket trials on May 14
Chandigarh, May 11 The trials will be held at Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 19. Interested cricketers, born on or before September 1, 1987, should report to the CCA general- secretary, Mr Surinder Singh Baiji. |
