2 youths shot dead at Rania village
Old rivalry suspected

Ludhiana, April 25
Petty rivalry which often occurs among youths crossed all limits of frenzy when two youths were shot dead at Rania village here late last night. One group attacked the house of Kuljit Singh, killing him on the spot.

2 arrested in Rs 3-crore emigration scam
Ludhiana, April 25
Two of the four deceivers who had disappeared last year after defrauding 134 residents of the city of over Rs 3 crore on the pretext of providing them jobs in England have been caught. A city court has remanded them in police remand.

CITU threatens repeat of Gurgaon

Early registration of Amarnath pilgrims sought
Ludhiana, April 25
Members of Shri Amarnath Baltal Langars Organisation have demanded that the registration of pilgrims should be started without delay through the internet as well as J&K Bank, post offices and other banks.

70-year-old ex-serviceman found murdered
Mullanpur Dakha, April 25
A highly decomposed body of a septuagenarian ex-serviceman was recovered from a deserted plot here today. The body has been identified as of Ajaib Singh (70), who had been missing for the past three days.

LIC Zindagi Express to be in city tomorrow
Ludhiana, April 25
As part of the golden jubilee celebrations of Life Insurance Corporation, a special train — LIC Zindagi Express, will be flagged of from the Safdarjung railway station, New Delhi, tomorrow by Mr Pawan Kumar Bansal, Union Minister of State for Finance, and will reach Ludhiana on April 27 where it will remain for a day. The train, an exhibition on wheels, showcases the history of life insurance in the country and the achievements of the LIC.

CMCH team trains police rescue squads
Ludhiana, April 25
Keeping alive its legacy to reach out to everyone who needs to be helped, Christian Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) here sent its team of Ambulance Mobike and Rescue Services (AMARS) to the Police Lines in the city to impart basic first aid and rescue training to mobile patrolling teams of the local police control room.

Conference: it will be houseful, claims Birmi
Ludhiana, April 25
Chief Parliamentary Secretary Malkiat Singh Birmi has said farmers from all villages of Ludhiana rural constituency will take part in a party conference to be held on April 30 at the grain market, Salem Tabri, to express gratitude to Capt Amarinder Singh for declaration of bonus of Rs 50 per quintal of wheat. The issue of waiving loans of debt-ridden farmers will also be taken up with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, he assured.

The industrial and financial capital of Punjab, Ludhiana, is faced with a serious problem pertaining to the smooth movement of vehicular traffic in the wake of increasing number of four-wheelers and two-wheelers. Traffic jams are a common sight in the town and traffic police personnel are finding it difficult to tackle the situation.

Book on poetry by Sweden-based NRI released

“The voice of India” by Natha Singh Gill is a compilation of poems that has been written by him in Punjabi. Gill is settled in Sweden but is a frequent visitor to Punjab. The book was released by the Director of Extension Education, Dr S.S. Gill, here yesterday.

Man held with 15 kg of poppy husk
Mandi Ahmedgarh, April 25
The Sudhar police has arrested a resident of Hissowal village for allegedly preparing packets of poppy husk at home and selling them to retail customers. The police seized 15 kg of poppy husk and equipment used in packing.

The Ludhiana Management Association (LMA) organised a seminar on achieving business efficiency for competitiveness late last evening. Panel set up to decide on utilising PAU grant
Ludhiana, April 25
The Punjab Government has set up a committee headed by Dr G. S. Kalkat, Chairman, Punjab Farmers Commission, and comprising the Financial Commissioner (Development), Mr P. K. Verma, Dr K. S. Aulakh, Vice-Chancellor, Punjab Agricultural University, Dr B. S. Dhillon, Director, Research, PAU, and Mr Himmat Singh, Managing Director, Punjab Agro Industries Corporation, to decide the modalities for utilising a Rs 100-crore grant given by the Central Government to Punjab Agricultural University for research.

Makkar asks agitating teachers to maintain discipline

The SGPC chief, Mr Avtar Singh Makkar, today warned the teachers and the Principal of Nankana Public School against breaking the discipline. Mr Makkar visited the school today to pacify the agitating teachers. He asked them to maintain discipline in the school at all cost.

Sky for a school roof
Ludhiana, April 25

A government school opened under Sarv Sikhiya Abhiyan is virtually being run under the sky, mocking at the tall claims of the state government about overall development. Around 200 students brave the vagaries of weather in this school which is for slum children on the Pakhowal road.

Students of Tara Singh college excel

Ludhiana, April 25
The students of M.Com (3rd semester) of the Master Tara Singh Memorial College for Women have brought laurels to the college by getting 100 per cent result. All students have been placed in the first division with four students securing 75 per cent marks. Shweta and Rakhi Aggarwal stood first in the college with 81 per cent marks followed by Amarjeet and Sapna securing 80.5 per cent and 80 per cent marks, respectively.

Bharti Mobile to pay interest for wrong charging 
Ludhiana, April 25
The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum has ordered Bharti Mobile Limited to pay interest @ 9 per cent per annum from the day it illegally withheld Rs 7,820 pertaining to a consumer, who was charged wrongly. The company was also directed to pay Rs 2,500 to the consumer as the cost of litigation.

Nasal tumour removed 
Ludhiana, April 25
A 62-year-old patient who came to the DMCH with nose blockage, nasal discharge and bleeding was diagnosed with inverted papilloma (benign tumour of lateral wall of nose). Dr Hemant Chopra, Professor and head, and Dr Kapil Dua, Assistant Professor, Department of ENT, respectively, removed the tumour through endoscopy, sans an incision.

As many as 93 boys and 25 girls turned up for the trails conducted by the Punjab Basketball Association at the indoor stadium of Guru Nanak Sports Complex here today.
