School awaits aid as ministers forget promise
Mandi Ahmedgarh, April 12 Chaudhary Jagjit Singh, Local Bodies Minister, Ms Gurkanwal Kaur, Social Welfare Minister and Ms Razia Sultana, MLA of the constituency, had been invited to a function held at Gandhi School on September 19, 2004 by the local unit of the Ambedkar Society. Chaudhary Jagjit Singh had then announced a grant of Rs 1.5 lakh for the renovation of Dr B.R Ambedkar Complex after inaugurating it and Ms Gurkanwal Kaur had declared to send Rs 1 lakh for opening a library in memory of Dr Ambedkar. Ms Razia Sultana had also announced a grant of Rs 50,000 for supplementing computer section of the institute. Though Ms Razia Sultana kept her promise and sent a cheque for the promised amount, the grant announced by Chaudhary Jagjit Singh and Ms Gurkanwal Kaur was never received by the school authorities. ‘‘Despite our repeated requests to the leaders concerned, we have not received any amount so far. As we had dedicated the complex to Dr Ambedkar we could not divert funds meant for other purposes to the project’’, said Mr Mangat Rai Jain, president of the management committee. He said the school was not in a position to complete the renovation work and update the library without the financial help, promised by the ministers. Mr Pardeep Sharda, Principal of the school, said he hoped to receive the grants declared at a function organised to mark the birth anniversary of Dr Ambedkar. ‘‘We have requested the local Congress leaders to impress upon the state leaders to keep their promise and enable us maintain the complex accordingly’’, said Mr Sharda. |
PCMA blames PU
Ludhiana, April 13 A lot of hue and cry has been raised by members of the PCMA over reducing the internal assessment marks for M.Com classes from 50 in each paper to 20 only. The reason for the reduction of marks given by PU was that internal assessment had been misused by some of the teachers and more marks had been awarded to certain students, who had scored just pass marks in written tests. Talking to the Ludhiana Tribune, Prof Ashwani Bhalla, General Secretary
PCMA, said, ‘‘What is the guarantee that these 20 marks will not be misused? Instead of reducing the marks, PU should take serious steps to reform the whole system’’. He further added that the old model examination system, which relied more on external evaluation, had failed miserably to give concrete results. Evaluation of students on the basis of external final examination was in vogue in all institutions. Under this system it often happened that a subject was taught by one person, the question paper was set by another and the student’s answer scripts were evaluated by a third person. ‘‘The decision to scrap the internal assessment system just because of fault of certain teachers, is just unfortunate’’, said Mr Bhalla. Dr Vijay
Asdhir, vice-president of the association, said, ‘‘The present type of written examinations tempt the student to prepare for the examinations by memorising lecture notes for reproduction in the examination. Not only this, the students are subjected to unnecessary stress and fear during examinations. Secondly, the percentage of failure in the system is very high with the result that a student is likely to resort to malpractices to clear the exams. This is because the way the examinations are structured in the university’’. He suggested that daily monitoring of the students by their class teacher played an important role in assessing their performance. The students should feel that teachers had the power to bring down their percentage, if they did not attend lectures, study or misbehaved in the class. At this juncture when all academic bodies like the University Grants commission (UGC) and the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) were laying stress on continuous internal evaluation of the students, the decision of the academic bodies of the PU to reduce internal assessment marks in the wake of faults of some of the teachers of colleges needed some orientation and raised many question on the way these bodies were performing, said Mr
Asdhir. |
B.Com I students demand grace marks
Ludhiana, April 13 Prof Deepak Dhingra, joint secretary, PCMA, talking to Ludhiana Tribune said as per university syllabus, students were required to attempt two questions of 15 marks each from both sections B and C out of the four questions. "But in today's question paper, students were asked to attempt three questions of 10 marks each out of the five questions (from section B and C). The students were not only confused but this new style made the paper very lengthy. Such lapse on the part of one of the highest ranked universities in the country is unfortunate", said Professor Dhingra. Confusion prevailed among the BCom I students. Meanwhile, the PCMA members, including Dr Prem Kumar, president, Prof Ashwini Bhalla, general secretary and Mr Rajesh Marwaha, district president, have urged the university authorities to take corrective measures and ensure that other papers should not find such lapses. The members also demanded 10 grace marks for every BCom I student. |
