Hizb militant with Press card held
Srinagar, April 8 He said Mohammad Shafi Sheikh, alias Ali Mohammad, alias Alia, was apprehended while trying to target the security forces on April 5. The spokesman said a joint operation was launched by 47 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) and the special task force (STF) of the Jammu and Kashmir Police in Doru village, Sopore, which resulted in Sheikh’s arrest. His accomplice, however, managed to escape, the spokesman added. He said Sheikh was Hizb’s financial controller and used to coordinate activities of various other militant groups active in the Handwara-Zalurah-Sopore belt. The 40-year-old militant later confessed to having received training in handling and operating sophisticated communication equipment in Pakistan, the spokesman said. Shiekh also confessed to his involvement in IED attacks, including one on 52 RR and 15 RR and a motor cycle bomb on a troop carrying vehicle at Warpura in 2004, in the Sopore-Bandipur belt. Around 40 kg of high grade explosive material was also seized from his possession which he was planning to use against the security forces on the Bandipur axis, he added. The spokesman said Shiekh coordinated construction of hideouts and caches for various militant groups. The spokesman said Sheikh was also involved in killings of several innocent civilians. He has confessed to killing one forester of the Zalurah belt and another school dropout, Raja Arshad Mir of Mawar, Naugam. A payment list amounting to Rs 41 lakh containing 359 names of local militants of all groups was also seized from him, the spokesman said. Meanwhile, a militant, along with his entire family, surrendered before the Army at the Nanak post in Uri after crossing the Line of Control (LoC) from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), an official spokesman said. Naseer Ahmed Juzvi, a resident of Sultandaki in Uri and affiliated with the Islamic Front militant outfit, had crossed over to PoK in 1990 for arms training, he added. The spokesman said Juzvi married Naseema, a resident of Muzaffarabad, during his stay in PoK. Last night, Juzvi, his wife and four children crossed the LoC at the Kaman post and surrendered before the troops without arms and ammunition, he added. Earlier, seven militants had reportedly crossed the LoC from Uri and surrendered before the authorities. Several political leaders and groups have urged the government to offer general amnesty to the disgruntled youth who crossed over to PoK for arms training and were now willing to return to India and lead a normal life. Jammu: Two Myanmar nationals were taken into custody by the Army while they were trying to cross over to Pakistan from the Indian side of the international border in Akhnoor sector of Jammu and Kashmir, official sources said. The personnel of 157 TA battalion took them into custody in the Nursinghpura area in Akhnoor while they were moving towards the international border yesterday, they said. The personnel also recovered Rs 35 from their possession.

Taiwan tourist’s body found, to be cremated in Kashmir
Srinagar, April 8 Highly-placed sources said that Huang would be cremated here on Monday once her husband arrives from Taiwan. They said Huang’s second daughter Liu Tsai Lin, along with her friend Chenshin Chi, arrived here this morning. Huang’s other daughter Resdenda Chin, and her friend Joseph, who reached here on April 1 to trace her mother, had left for Taiwan yesterday. The sources said a shocked Liu Tsai identified the body of her mother. She said her mother had undergone surgery and bore marks of stitches on her stomach. After identifying the body, Liu Tsai claimed the body, but asked the authorities here to go ahead with the cremation, they added. However, the authorities contacted Taiwan Embassy officials in New Delhi who refused to give them permission to cremate Huang, the sources said. They said the Embassy officials told the authorities here that her daughter could not decide about the cremation and only her husband can take a decision in this regard. The Embassy officials asked the authorities here to wait till Monday as they had informed Huang’s husband and he would be arriving in Srinagar that day, the sources added. They said the cremation would now be held on Monday once Huang’s husband arrives here. However, no top police official was available for comment despite several efforts to contact them. The sources said the police has registered a criminal case and Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Srinagar Munir Khan will investigate the matter. They said despite Liu Tsai identifying the body of Huang, the authorities have decided to conduct a DNA test on her. Earlier, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police Farooq Ahmed told UNI that Huang’s daughter had identified the body. The DIG said there were no external wounds on the body. “Apparently, it appears that she must have drowned in the Lake. The body is highly decomposed and seems to have been in the water for quite a long time,” he added. Mr Ahmed said the body had been sent for post-mortem. — UNI |
Wreckage of bus still untraced
Jammu, April 8 Armymen and policemen made efforts for the second day to find the wreckage of the bus that had drowned in the deep waters but the strong current made them beat a hasty retreat. The only progress made this afternoon was the recovery of another unidentified body of a woman. With this, three bodies have so far been recovered from the steep hill slope. It appears that the exact death toll may now remain a mystery, as there was a poor chance of recovery of bodies of other passengers. The Divisional Commissioner, Mr Pankaj Jain, and the IGP, Dr S.P. Vaid, flew to the accident spot to supervise the rescue operations. The Deputy Commissioner, Doda, Mr Gulzar Ahmad Qureshi, said the bus was not yet traceable. The iron chain of the cranes was thrown towards the possible spot where the wreckage of the bus might be lying, but it failed to hook the debris as the turbulent river washed the chain away. |
