Fight against drug mafia: Residents of the Nai Abadi area here have formed an action committee to fight the drug mafia. Mr Prem Kalra, president, Durgiana Market Association, has been elected convener. The action committee resolved to organise an awareness rally against the drug mafia. Cooperation from other trade and social organisations would be sought, Mr Kalra said.
HOSHIARPUR
Govt decision decried: To discuss the apathetic attitude of the state government towards private schools, a meeting of the Punjab Private School Association of Hoshiarpur unit was held here on Saturday. It was felt that with the closure of non-affiliated private schools, thousands of teachers and non-teaching staff would be rendered jobless. Mr Manjit Singh, president of the association, urged the state government to reconsider its decision.

Credit plan: The Deputy Commissioner, Mr Krishan Kumar; launched the District Credit Plan for the financial year 2006-07. The total outlay of the plan is 755.81 crore, focusing primarily on agriculture and allied activities for which credit facilities to the tune of Rs 496.88 crore will be extended during the current financial year. Besides, Rs 15.62 crore have been earmarked for providing credit facility for the effective implementation of government sponsored schemes for the uplift of the weaker sections.

Heritage site in danger: The Punjab Heritage Foundation, an NGO, on Sunday highlighted that the historical site related to Maharaja Ranjit Singh on the Shivalik Hills was in danger due to an expansion project of an automobile company here. The district president of the foundation, Mr Amarjit Singh
Satyal, demanded an area of 200 m around the site to be declared protected.
