ABOHAR
Fight against drug mafia: Residents of the Nai Abadi area here have formed an action committee to fight the drug mafia. Mr Prem Kalra, president, Durgiana Market Association, has been elected convener. The action committee resolved to organise an awareness rally against the drug mafia. Cooperation from other trade and social organisations would be sought, Mr Kalra said.

HOSHIARPUR
Govt decision decried: To discuss the apathetic attitude of the state government towards private schools, a meeting of the Punjab Private School Association of Hoshiarpur unit was held here on Saturday. It was felt that with the closure of non-affiliated private schools, thousands of teachers and non-teaching staff would be rendered jobless. Mr Manjit Singh, president of the association, urged the state government to reconsider its decision.

KHARAR
Prize distribution: Rising Sun Public School, Mundi Kharar, held its annual prize distribution function. Mr Charanjit Singh, President , Municipal Council, Kharar, was the chief guest. The school authorities informed the parents that day boarding facilities had also been introduced at the school.

NAWANSHAHR
Credit plan: The Deputy Commissioner, Mr Krishan Kumar; launched the District Credit Plan for the financial year 2006-07. The total outlay of the plan is 755.81 crore, focusing primarily on agriculture and allied activities for which credit facilities to the tune of Rs 496.88 crore will be extended during the current financial year. Besides, Rs 15.62 crore have been earmarked for providing credit facility for the effective implementation of government sponsored schemes for the uplift of the weaker sections.

ROPAR
Heritage site in danger
: The Punjab Heritage Foundation, an NGO, on Sunday highlighted that the historical site related to Maharaja Ranjit Singh on the Shivalik Hills was in danger due to an expansion project of an automobile company here. The district president of the foundation, Mr Amarjit Singh Satyal, demanded an area of 200 m around the site to be declared protected.

Appointed
: Mr Kasturi Lal Mintu, vice-president, Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee, has been appointed press secretary of the Punjab Rice Millers Association. He will also act as the spokesman of the association.

Medical camp: Over 200 women were examined at a free medical camp organised by the Women's Welfare Society at the Community Hall of the Tribune Colony, Baltana, here. Prominent among those present were Mr Narinder Sharma and Ms Manisha Malik, president and vice-president of the Zirakpur Nagar Panchayat; Mr Mangal Sain Saini, president of the Tribune Colony; Mr Parveen Sharma, president of Saini Vihar-II; Ms Alka Saini and Ms Leela Goel.

Contests for children: The managing committee of the HIG (L) Group Agency, Sector 38 West under the presidentship of Mr S. K. Budhiraja held a function here today in which various competitions were organised. The events included three-legged race, spoon potato race, bag race, slow cycle race for children, musical chairs for women and men, antakshri, baby show for children below two years, fancy dress competition for children below eight and painting competition. The committee also awarded prizes to children who had excelled in the CBSE examinations in 2005, according to Mr K.M. Bhandari, general secretary.

Dental camp held
: Desh Bhagat Dental College and Hospital organised a free dental check-up camp at DAV Public School here. The camp was conducted by a team of experienced doctors. According to Dr Zora Singh, the Desh Bhagat Group has been providing the latest dental facilities at free dental check - up camps in various schools, colleges and religious places in the surrounding areas for the past many years. As many as 55 students were examined and free medicines were distributed among the needy students. Dr Vimal Kalia, Principal of the college, and the whole school staff were also present at this camp.

Orientation programme: Saint Soldier International Convent School here organised an orientation programme. Beginning with the welcome speech, Ms Amrit Kalsi, junior wing coordinator, highlighted a few essentials for helping students to attain the dignity of a true human being. Teachers from playway-Class V gave their introduction and ensured parents of providing the right environment. The programme ended with Principal V. Tiwana’s speech.

AMBALA
2 held for firing at girl: Two youths have been arrested for shooting at the sister of an alleged gangster, Bobby. SP, Ambala, Rajbir Deswal, on Sunday said that Saurabh and Vikas had been arrested for shooting at Ritu on January 15. He said they were both considered to be associates of alleged gangster Nishan Singh. Ritu was shot at as she was a witness in the Rajinder Bobby murder case, he said.

Credit plan: Deputy Commissioner Manish Garg on Sunday launched a Rs 148 crore annual credit plan of UCO Bank for Bilaspur district for the current financial year which is Rs 30 crore more than last year.
