Traders to get VAT refunds within 15 days
Jalandhar, February 7 Mr D.P. Reddy, Excise and Taxation Commissioner, Punjab, said this soon after his meeting with the officials of the department here today. He said he had received complaints that the dealers’ money was getting locked up with the department. He added that he wanted to win back the dealers’ confidence by assuring them that things were changing for the better. He said there was yet another amendment to the system to further simplify the VAT applications. He said the dealers would now have to submit C-forms just once at the closing of the financial year, unlike the previous system under which the forms had to be submitted during all monthly and quarterly refund applications. He said the amendment had been made since January 25. He said the total refund that the department had to make this time was Rs 78 crore, of which Rs 25.22 crore still had to be paid. He said all refunds were being paid at district levels. He said he had appointed the Excise and Taxation Officers as designated officers for paying refunds up to Rs 1 lakh to the dealers. He said that in case the refunds were above this value, they could be taken from the Assistant Excise and Taxation Commissioners. The commissioner pointed out that even as refunds had to be paid within 60 days of the filing of the applications, these could not be paid in time as the dealers did not submit complete documents. He said as such they would not be paid any interest by the department for the delay, as it was not a mistake on the part of the officials. He said this was the reason why the department had reduced documentation by allowing the provision of submitting C-form just once. Comparing the collection with the department this time vis-à-vis the previous year, he said the amount had shot up by as much as 22 per cent after the implementation of VAT. He said the collection this time was nearly Rs 4,000 crore, almost Rs 730 crore more than the previous year. Earlier, Mr Reddy and Mr Neelkanth Avanth, Additional Excise and Taxation Commissioner, held one-and-a-half hour long meeting with the officials of the Jalandhar division. Interestingly, all officials present in the meeting feigned ignorance of today’s raids conducted on Mr Ponty Chadha’s vends in Jalandhar. |
DMU detained in protest against ‘toxic’ water flow
Phagwara, February 7 Adding fuel to the fire, a former Senior Vice- President of the Phagwara Nagar Council, Mr Gurbachan Singh Walia, declared at the protest site that if the water problem was not solved within a month, he would “immolate” himself. Meanwhile, the protesters surrounded the DMU, some climbed on it and others laid themselves on the track. The police had a tough time persuading the protesters to clear the track. The protesters alleged that the foul-smelling “toxic” water from the mill was entering into their houses and portending the outbreak of an epidemic. They claimed that many residents of the area were already suffering from water-borne diseases. Some residents even alleged that a six-month-old male child, Himanshu, had died of gastroenteritis in gali number 16 of the locality yesterday. The health authorities, however, denied any such incident. The protest led the civil and police officials to visit the affected houses. When contacted, Mr J.C. Sodhi, General Manager (L&IR), JCT Limited, denied that the water from the mill was overflowing into Ratanpura. He claimed that the water was coming from the side of the Khothran Road. Earlier, the residents of New Model Town had staged a demonstration on January 27 in protest against the “overflow of mill’s contaminated water” into their houses. The DC, Mr Sameer Kumar, asked the local SDM to invoke Section 133 of the Criminal Procedure Code. The SDM had held two meetings with all concerned on January 28 and claimed that the overflow had stopped. |
