10 paramedics trained by UK expert
Our Correspondent

Ludhiana, January 22
A new batch of 10 paramedics is ready at Christian Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) here to serve the city to provide on-the-spot medical care in time of need. The new batch of paramedics has been certified by the West Country Ambulance Services, National Health Services, the UK, for successfully completing the training.

Mr Gerry Carpinini distributed certificates to the successful candidates at a small valedictory function on Thursday.

Mr Gerry Carpinini from West Country Ambulance Services was in the city for past six weeks, imparting training to the selected nurses to staff of the ambulance, mobike and accident rescue services (AMARS) unit of CMCH.

Dr Rajeev Kapoor, Deputy Medical Superintendent and Coordinator of AMARS project, disclosed that CMCH had initiated the project in January, 2004. Fifteen paramedics were trained by the team from the Surrey Ambulance Services and the set up was planned in coordination with the National Health Services, the UK.

"Under the project, a special three- digit number, 104, has also been assigned for easy access of the service to the city residents. Control room is receiving over 50 calls per week, most of which are cardiac emergencies, traffic accidents or burns and the AMARS team has saved many precious lives. The team has also been conducting road shows in Ludhiana, Khanna and Jagraon to make people aware of the medical issues related to traffic accidents."

According to Dr Kapoor, road accidents were the most common causes of road traffic accident deaths. India had the highest accident rate in the world, 142 per 10,000 vehicles, whereas in the European countries it was only 2 per 10,000 vehicles. Thus, traffic accidents presented a real public health problem. But with the right pre-hospitalisation management (care in first one hour of the injury) could help save precious lives and this was the main aim of AMARS unit.
