Fortis doctors give tips to scribes on healthy living
Tribune News Service

Mohali, January 22
The Chandigarh Press Club in collaboration with Fortis Hospital here organised a workshop for mediapersons. A large number of journalists participated.

Dr Arun Kochar, interventional cardiologist, spoke on sedentary lifestyle and how this was an invitation to heart disease as well as other diseases like diabetes and respiratory ailments.

“These diseases can be prevented and even frequently reversed through physical exercise,” Dr Kochar said. “Looking at why physical exercise makes individuals so much healthier gives us an interesting perspective on how the human body really works.

“The human body is designed to move around and by moving the muscles, ligaments and limbs, you actually massage the tissues and organs of the body, bringing them oxygen and enhancing their flexibility.

“One should walk or jog for 20 minutes at least three times a week. Alternatively, if the work schedule makes this a difficult option, then one should walk 10,000 steps in the office itself during the day,” he explained.

Journalists, both reporting and desk staff, spent a lot of time sitting or were on their feet. Hence, it was important for them to adopt the correct posture while sitting and standing to avoid back pain.

This was stated by Dr Manuj Wadhwa, Senior Consultant and orthopaedic surgeon. “When sitting at your desk, do not bend forward as it puts tremendous pressure on the spine. This is due to the basic engineering principle which states that bending something stiff creates stress in the object being bent.

“The more the object is bent out of position, the greater the stress. To avoid this, sit close to the desk so that you don’t need to bend forward and use a foot-rest. This will ease the pressure on the spine.

Dr Arvind Sharma, Consultant, Ophthalmology, spoke on eye care and how eyes were affected by the rays emitted by the computer screen. He gave advice on how to protect the eyes against infections and foreign bodies.

Dr Hardeep Singh, Consultant Psychiatry, spoke on stress management and gave tips to journalists on how to “de-stress” themselves in order to combat the stress of deadlines and how to balance personal and professional life. Dr Hardeep Singh gave tips to relax, including deep breathing and yoga, and asked the journalists to take to gardening. He advised journalists to delegate work and focus on what they were really good at to ease workload.

Dietician Sonia Gandhi explained the importance of diet and talked about various kinds of hazards that awaited a journalist when he was on the move and did not have the time to go home and have proper food and had to make do with junk food.

Ms Gurpinder Kaur, physiotherapist, gave special tips on exercises that could be done while working in the office. She advised journalists to spend at least five minutes every hour away from their computer.
