Folk songs reverberate in colleges

Khanna, January 13
Lohri was celebrated by staff and students of A.S. College for Boys here today on the college campus. Dr R.S. Jhanji, Principal of the college, congratulated the staff and the students on the occasion. Students presented a cultural programme on the occasion. Lohri was burnt and sweets were distributed.

Mr Sanjiv Dhamija, secretary of the college, said the Lohri is a symbol of human integration. Prof H.L. Behal and Prof Dr Bachitar Singh also addressed the function.

Cultural programme: Guru Nanak Girls College, Model Town, celebrated Lohri with great fun and frolic here on Friday. Principal Dr Charanjit Mahal congratulated the staff and students on the occasion. She said Lohri was an extremely auspicious day which marked the culmination of winter and was a symbol of fraternity.

A cultural program was organised which comprised of gidha, mimicry, folk songs, dances and other interesting items.

Ramgarhia Girls College: Lohri was celebrated with great gusto and fervour by staff and students of Ramgarhia Girls College here on Friday. A huge bonfire was lit in the college grounds and the college reverberate with the songs of Lohri.

The function was presided over by Mr Ranjodh Singh, president of the Ramgarhia Education Council. Ms Harmit Kaur, Principal of the college, said such celebrations helped the students to identify with their cultural heritage and also strengthened their ties with teachers and friends.

Lohri folk songs: Punjabi winter festival Lohri was celebrated with great fervour at Doraha College of Education, here on Friday. The function was started in a traditional way with the lighting of bonfire and students singing 'Sunder Mundriye'. Lohri folk songs, dance items and giddha performances charmed the audience.

The dignitaries present on the occasion were Mr Sukhpal Singh, Ms Umal Kaur, Ms Amrit K Gurm. In the end, all the students, teachers and guests tapped their feet on the beat of dhol.

Lohri celebrations held for girl child

Khanna, January 13
A function to celebrate Lohri for girl child was organised at Government Girls Senior Secondary School by the Khanna Vikas Club here today. Nearly 155 newly born girl babies along with their parents were present at the function.

Mr S.K. Khanna, chairman of the club, said the club was celebrating Lohri for the girl child for the second consecutive year. He said the club had organised eight general medical check-up camps, eight free reflector-fitting camps and two tuberculosis camps.

Students of the school presented a cultural programme on the occasion. Tinu, a student of Class VII of the school, presented a song "Na Mari Na Mari Maa". Girl students presented a skit. The theme of the skit was female foeticide.

Mr Bansi Lal Tandon, president of the club, said it was the duty of the every citizen to help the social organisations in eradication of social evils like female foeticide.

Dr B.S. Kalsi, Dr P. D. Singla and Dr Gurpreet Singh examined the newly born babies on the occasion.

Schoolchildren dance around bonfire

Ludhiana, January 13
Rising flames of bonfire, colourful attires, giddha, bhangra, dandiya, peanuts and varieties of sweets marked the celebration of Lohri at Green Grove Public School, Mohanpur-Khanna.

The celebration began with the lighting of the bonfire by the Principal of the school, Ms Suzy George. She was accompanied by staff and students. Ms Sunita Duggal highlighted the importance of the day . Simranjit Kaur and Harmanjit Kaur, students of Class IX, it was celebrated with zest and zeal by the entire Punjabi community.

Shemrock: Shemrock Kindergarten celebrated Lohri here on Friday. The children came dressed in typical Punjabi dresses and they sang, danced and enjoyed the festivities of the festival.

Havan performed: Thirty students of Sanklap- 'The Social Club of BCM School' visited Swami Vivekanand Old Age Home, Model Town, here on Friday. A havan was performed to mark the birthday of Swami Vivekanand and sweets were distributed.

School decorated: Sunrise Kindergarten and Day Boarding Playway Nursery School, near City Centre, celebrated the lohri of a girl Eshita here on Friday. The school was decorated with kites and ballons.

30 jail inmates join deaddiction camp

Ludhiana, January 13
A 15-day deaddiction camp has been launched by Aas Kiran Deaddiction Centre, run by Guru Gobind Singh Study Circle, in Central Jail, here. The camp, which commenced on January 11, will be on till January 26. It has been organised in collaboration with the jail authorities. Thirty prisoners have joined the camp.

Dr Deepinder Singh, Director, Social and Health Services, with the circle, said today that the problem of drug addiction was more serious and alarming than ever before. Prof Balwinderpal Singh said the circle had been active to save society from the menace of drugs.

Jail Superintendent Kuldip Singh said human life is very precious and we must not spoil this gift by getting addicted to drugs. Dr Meharwant Singh of the centre, Deputy Superintendent of Jail Surinder Pal Singh Khanna, Asstiant Superintendent Vikramjit Singh Panthe, Dr Sukjit Singh and Dr Tilak Raj were also present at the camp on its first day.

Volleyball tournament

Ludhiana, January 13
The third edition of the volleyball and tug-of-war tournament to be organised by the Barewal Fatehpur Awana Sports Club will be held at Barewal village near here on January 14 and 15, according to Mr Rupinder Singh Grewal and Mr Mandeep Singh Grewal, president and general secretary, respectively, of the club.

The main attraction of this year’s event would be Bhagwant Mann, the famous comedy artist who would take part in volleyball matches. As many as 12 teams are expected to take part in volleyball and the winners will pocket the first prize of Rs 5,000 while a cash prize of Rs 4,000 will be given to the runners-up. The third position holders would receive a cash prize of Rs 3,000. The winners in the tug-of-war would get a cash prize of Rs 1,500.

Inter-school cricket

Ludhiana, January 13
The annual PCA Parle Inter-School Cricket Tournament (u-17 years) being organised by the Ludhiana District Cricket Association (LDCA) under the aegis of the Punjab Cricket Association will be conducted from January 15 to 22 here at the Bachan Singh Academy ground, Balloke village near Haibowal Khurd.

According to Mr Vinod Chitkara, honorary secretary, LDCA, six teams will be vying for top honours in this tournament to be played on league basis. The matches will be of 40-over.
