Rs 1 cr ST evasion found

Continuing its crackdown against evasion of sales tax, the Excise and Taxation Department conducted raids on three hosiery manufacturing and trading units in Chhawni Mohalla here today which led to the detection of unaccounted transactions worth over Rs 1 crore.

Government acts tough on NOCs to colleges

Contrary to last year, this time the government seems to have acted tough while issuing no-objection certificates to new colleges in the state. According to sources, almost 60 new B.Ed and physical education colleges had applied for the same but only 22 got clearance till January 2.

Watchman beaten up for stealing garments
Ludhiana, January 4
The Salim Tabri police has initiated investigations into a theft in a local factory, whose owner allegedly ‘‘took law into his hands’’ and beat up the watchman badly after the latter was allegedly found stealing some garments.

Man kills wife over property

Greed for property allegedly led a man to murder his wife with a sickle in Dhandra village this afternoon. The accused, Gurcharan Singh, an alleged drug addict, killed his wife, Rajbir Kaur, in their house. He targeted her face which had about five deep wounds.

2 held for gambling
Jagraon, January 4
Two persons have been held for cheating and gambling by the Sidhwanbet police in separate incidents. It arrested Vicky Anand of Mohalla Berian, Jagraon, and Gurmit Singh of Akhara and seized from their possession Rs 5,420 and Rs 2,220, respectively.

200 NSS volunteers take part in camps

One-stop workshop for hi-tech tractors

Dr Rajesh Arya, a consultant cardiac anaesthetist at Hero DMC Heart Institute here, has been offered a visiting professorship at Narayan Hridalaya, a renowned cardiac centre at Bangalore. Dr Arya had trained at the Bangalore institution as part of his fellowship programme in November, 2005.

The 24th rural sports-cum-cultural annual mela concluded at Bhadson village yesterday. It was organised by the Rural Sports Club, Bhadson, in association with the Punjab Police at government school, Bhadson. The chief guest on the occasion, B. K. Bhawra, DIG, Patiala Range, gave away the prizes to the winners.
