Students felicitate Korean students, teachers

Mohali, January 4
Students of Paragon Senior Secondary School, Sector 71, here today organised a felicitation and send off function in honour of a delegation of nine students and 10 teachers of South Korea.

Led by Mr Jeong Jong Hyo, Principal Jeong Myung Girls High School Mokpo, South Korea, the group had been visiting various places in Punjab over the past week.

The Punjab School Education Board Chairman, Mr Harbans Singh Sidhu, was the chief guest on the occasion and lauded the achievements of the school and pointed out that more schools should take up such exchange of students with foreign nations.

He added that this would lead to the reshaping of education in the state and give exposure to the teachers and the students so that they could see for themselves the fast changing world.

Thanking the management of the school Mr Jeong Jong Hyo expressed happiness over the hospitality accorded to the delegation. He said the group was taking back memories which they would cherish for the rest of their lives. The delegation members were presented with gifts and mementos by Ms Kulwant Kaur, president of the Paragon Educational Society, Mohali. TNS

CBSE Class X, XII exam dates

Class XII examinations to be conducted by the CBSE will be held from March 1 to April 8 while Class X examinations will begin on March 2 and end on March 27.

The Class X examinations would begin with the social science examination followed by the home science examination on March 4. On March 6, candidates would appear for the elem. of business, introductory IT, elem Book K and Accy, typewriting English and typewriting Hindi examinations.

The mathematics examination would take place on March 9 followed by the painting examination on March 11. Candidates would appear for the comm. Sanskrit examination on March 13. On March 17 candidates would take the Manipuri/ Kannada/ Tibetan/ French/ German/ Russian/ Persian/ Lepcha/ music kar. vocal/ music kar. inst. mel/ music kar. inst. per/ music hind. inst. mel/ music hind ins.per/ bhutia/ Kashmiri/ Mizo examinations.

Science and technology /Science and Technology W/O PR examinations will be held on March 20. Candidates will appear for the Urdu Course A/ Urdu course B/ Punjabi/ Bengali/ Tamil/ Telegu/ Sindhi/ Marathi/ Gujarati/ Malayalam/ Orriya/ Assamese/Arabic/ Portugese/ Nepali/ Limboo/ Spanish examination on March 22.

Hindi course A/B examination would be held on March 24 and the examinations would end on March 27 with the English comm./English lit. and Lng. examinations.

Winter rural cultural fest begins

A fancy dress and on-the-spot painting competition was organised on the start of the three-day winter rural cultural festival organised by the Center for Rural Environment Education at Nadiali village, near here, today.

The festival was inaugurated by Mr Mohinder Pal Singh Aulakh, former Director-General of Police, Punjab. Mr Sham Singh, officiating News Editor, Punjabi Tribune, presided over the function.

Prof H.S. Dilgir, secretary-general of the organisation, said 70 students had participated in the fancy dress competition while 65 students had taken part in the painting competition. Students even from nursery and KG classes took part in the fancy dress contest.

Prof Dilgir said the contestants were divided into two groups depending on their classes. His aim was at motivating rural children to compete with other students.

Blend east, west in management concepts: expert

Faculty members of management courses need to blend the Eastern philosophy of ‘knowledge as salvation’ with the Western philosophy of ‘knowledge as power’ to develop a right balance in the education offered to students, said Dr S.K.Salwan, Vice-Chancellor of Punjab Technical University, Jalandhar, while inaugurating an AICTE-sponsored two-week-long programme for staff development at Gian Jyoti Institute of Management and Technology here yesterday.

Faculty members from management institutes in Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttranchal and the Chandigarh region are participating in the workshop.

NSS camp inaugurated

A 10-day NSS camp being organised by the students of Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 47-D, was inaugurated by Mr R.S. Saini, president of Parents Teacher Association today. The students also organised a rally in the streets of Sector 47, to make people aware about health. The theme of the rally was health awareness.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Basota emphasised on cleanliness and on personal hygiene. During a rally, NSS volunteers carried placards and having slogans based on health, environment, and AIDS awareness.

District Courts
Corruption case against ex-Home Secretary: orders reserved

Chandigarh, January 4
The CBI Special Judge today concluded the arguments on the charges of corruption against former UT Home Secretary N.K. Jain and Superintendent in the UT Transport K.B. Goel. The case under the Prevention of Corruption Act against the two had been registered by the CBI.

After hearing the arguments, the CBI Special Judge, Mr Sandeep Jain, fixed January 16 for orders on the charges.

Dispensary in courts soon

A dispensary will soon start functioning in the district courts here. This information was revealed during a case of poor amenities which came up for hearing in the court of Mr R.K. Bhankar, Judicial Magistrate (Junior Division) here today.

The case of poor amenities has been filed by human rights activist, Arvind Thakur. During the hearing of the case, the counsel for the administration revealed that the Director, Health Services, had decided to open a dispensary with a doctor, a pharmacist, and two Class IV employees. The applicant had also sought a proper canteen and functional lifts. The next date of hearing has been fixed for January 13.

Arrest stayed

In a case of alleged rape of a Chennai-based girl by Dildar Singh, a youth from Amritsar, a local court today stayed the arrest of the youth as he had agreed to join the police investigations. The court also directed the police to inform the boy’s parents, five days in advice, before arresting them.

The case came up for hearing in the court of Mr R.S. Bawana, Additional District and Sessions Judge. The next date of hearing has been fixed for January 18. It may be mentioned that the girl had, in a complaint, alleged that she had been sexually abused and deserted in a Sector 22 hotel here a few days back.

On the basis of the complaint, the police had registered a case against Dildar Singh for kidnapping, abducting the girl to compel her for marriage and raping her.

Justice Tapen Sen transferred to Kolkata

Chandigarh, January 4
Mr Justice Tapen Sen of the Punjab and Haryana High Court has been transferred to Calcutta High Court. He has been transferred on his own request.

As per the notification issued in this regard, he has been asked to join at Kolkata by January 16.

Mr Justice Tapen Sen was one of the two Judges who had joined the Punjab and Haryana High Court on December 2, 2004.

The other Judge was Mr Justice Uma Nath Singh. He had been shifted to Chandigarh from the Jharkhand High Court.

During his tenure at Chandigarh, Mr Justice Tapen Sen became popular due to his nature and patronising attitude towards young lawyers.

He is expected to join at Kolkata next week.

Consultation rooms inaugurated at High Court

The Punjab and Haryana High Court Chief Justice, Mr Justice D.K. Jain, today inaugurated the seven consultation rooms constructed by the Punjab and Haryana High Court Bar Association.

He congratulated the association for its endeavours in providing a better working atmosphere to the lawyers.

Mr Atul Lakhanpal, president, Punjab and Haryana High Court Bar Association, said the consultation rooms were a long-standing demand of the lawyers and these would allow the lawyers to interact with their clients in privacy.

Judges of the high court, court officials, Bar vice-president Surjit Singh Salar, secretary Lokesh Sinhal and lawyers were present on the occasion.

Later, interacting with the mediapersons, the Chief Justice said the court would soon designate an officer to deal with various queries under the Right to Information Act.
