They come up with an idea or design, we modify the designs and present them in most attractive manner. The boutique owners get anything between Rs 1,000 to Rs 3,000 for an embroidery work from their customers and we hardly get Rs 500 to Rs 1,000 for the same from the boutiques. But we do not crib as we get orders in bulk. I have got an order of making 400 suits till February end. Such orders are placed by boutique owners only”, said Javed, an artisan working at Sunet village. These artisans have created their unique patterns and some of them have given interesting names to their creations like jhoomar design, kundan-patti design, jhumka design, gotta-patti haar etc. They do thread-work, bead-work, salma-sitara work, sequin, embellishments, gota-patti work etc. Several teenage children can also be seen working on these addas with their elder brothers and fathers. A ten-year old child, Aslam on asking about his qualification, said, “Nobody in our family got education. We have been doing this kashidakari for ages, so there is no use wasting time on getting education”. Rehman, who is into this work with his two wives, said, “We know that boutique owners are the persons, who get maximum profit. To be very honest, our daily bread and butter depends on them. We can not afford to lose them. At times, when there is some export order, we try to compensate as well. The NRIs appreciate our talent, and majority of them are willing to pay the price of our hard-work without creating a fuss”. |
