City liquor shops to double
Chandigarh, December 19
Under the draft excise policy 2006-2007, the city is all set have nearly double the number of liquor shops as compared to the existing numbers. The city will have as many as 65 vends for the retail sale of country liquor and proposes as many as 150 vends of IMFL against the present 78 vends in which the sale of all types of liquor, including country liquor, IMFL, beer and wine is allowed.

Jathedar has no right to take decisions: scholars

Eminent Sikh scholars, who met here today, attacked the authority of the Akal Takht and said the Jathedar had no right to take a decision on Sikh issues. Only Sarbat Khalsa is competent to take a decision on all vital issues.

BJP seeks survey of area under land Act
Mohali, December 19
The government should order a fresh survey of the area falling under the Punjab Land Preservation Act, 1900, which had not been done for decades. An agitation will be launched in February if no action was taken in this regard.

Army to use entire budget expenditure

Sector 33 resident held for selling non-existing plots
Chandigarh, December 19
The local police today arrested a Sector 33 resident on the allegations of duping a Dhanas resident of Rs 2 lakh, taken as earnest money, for a non-existing plot. The police said the accused was caught when he was trying to strike a similar deal with another person.

4 arrested for gambling
Chandigarh, December 19
The local police arrested four persons on the charge of indulging in gambling at public place from the different parts in the city. In a separate incident a woman was nabbed for allegedly possessing smack. Elsewhere, two women and one person were arrested for allegedly stealing from different parts of the city.

Man robbed of Rs 40,000
Chandigarh, December 19
Three unidentified motorcyclists robbed an employee of a vernacular newspaper of Rs 40,000 at gun- point this evening. Giving details of the incident, the sources in the police said a case of robbery has been registered on the basis of a complaint filed by Mr Rakesh Kumar of Sector 52.

Special Crime Investigation Cell of the UT police today arrested a Manimajra resident and claimed to have solved a mobile snatching case. This time also, unique identification number of the mobile phone led the police to lay hands on the accused.

Summons issued to commission agent

The Chief Judicial Magistrate, Mr Gulab Singh, has issued summons to a commission agent who is accused of having filed a false affidavit before the court. The accused has been asked to appear in the court on April 20, 2006 .

Bihar, J&K, Assam debarred from football meet
Chandigarh, December 19
Three states of Bihar, Jammu and Kashmir and Assam have been debarred from participating in the AIFF Under-14 Festival. The action to debar these states and in all 27 players from different states was taken by the technical committee of the federation late this evening on the recommendation of the three-member medical panel, comprising Dr Manmohan Singh, Dr Rohini Setia and Dr Vikram.
