Infertility is curable, says gynaecologist
Tribune News Service

Ludhiana, December 3
The phenomenal success achieved in the world of medicine notwithstanding, there are still a number of myths revolving round infertility. Experts maintain that infertility in a number of cases is 100 per cent curable and couples need not spend fortunes for conception.

According to Dr Sarbjit Kaur Grewal, a leading gynaecologist with about three decades of experience, even the word infertility is a misnomer and it should be better described as “difficulty in conception”. She said there were a number of myths are being associated with it.

Judging from her long experience in the field, Dr Grewal maintains that infertility can always be checked and controlled. Other methods of inducing conception, like the commonly prevailing IVF (the in vitro fertilization) should be the secondary options.

Dr Grewal, who heads the gynaecology department in the SAS Grewal Multispeciality Hospital at Gurdev Nagar here, disclosed that infertility can even be caused by viral infections, which are curable. She said there are other instances in which infertility is 100 per cent curable with due medical aid.

The issue assumes importance as a number of “infertility treatment centres” have come up in the region, where people are literally robbed of their money. She maintained that while in exceptional cases advanced treatment might be required, but in most of the cases the treatment is not much complicated.

She said the most common misconception about the infertility is to attribute one single reason to it. She suggested that the reasons of infertility must be thoroughly scanned and investigated so that the treatment is prescribed accordingly.

Dr Grewal said above all it is the will of the couple that holds the key to conception. “You need to have firm determination to start the process of fertilisation”, she asserts, while adding, in most cases it is found that too simple reasons are responsible for a woman not conceiving. Awareness and education about the issue, she said, was also of paramount importance.
