When grit won and polio lost
Tribune News Service

Panchkula, December 3
It was a match with a difference. Twenty two players, afflicted with polio, came together to play the national obsession — cricket.

The two teams, led by Raja and Sonu as opposing captains, hit the ground at around 10. 30 am amidst cheers from students of Saket High School.

Inspite of their disability, these students did not lack in any aspect of — the game, be it batting, bowling or fielding.

Sunil, who had lost both his arms after an accident, emerged as the favourite player.

Since he could not hold a cricket bat, he was allowed to play by using his leg as a bat.

As Kuldip bowled ball after ball, Sunil wooed the audiences by hitting one six after another. By the end of the game, he was declared as Man of the Match for scoring highest runs.

Vikas Sharma of Team B, who is physically challenged, too, proved to be one of the favourite players by hitting the highest number of sixes.

Raja, who was captain of Team A, was adjudged the best bowler. In six overs, he took five wickets and allowed only two runs to the other team.

By the end of the match, Team A, with Raja as the captain were declared the winners. They won the match by three wickets.

Other than the cricket match, a musical chair game was also organised for the disabled girls of the school.

Suman, Babli and Amandeep won the first, second and third prizes respectively.

On this occasion, a Chandigarh-based couple — Mr Rajesh and Ms Ritu — celebrated the latter’s birthday by hosing lunch for 60 children of the school. They also gave away gifts to all the children.
