Punjab retain team championship trophy

Panchkula, November 26
Defending champions Punjab kept its supremacy when they beat hosts Haryana 3-1 to clinch the badminton team championship title in the 32nd All-India Electricity Boards Badminton Tournament being played here at the Tau Devi Lal Sports Complex in Sector 3, Panchkula, today.

Playing first singles, Mohammad Salim, a former Punjab champion, got the better of Mohan Lal to give a 1-0 lead, while in the second singles Sahil Arora downed Gulshan adding up the lead 2-0.

Later, in the doubles, Ram Lakhan and Sandeep of Punjab lost to Varinder and Surinder. At this juncture, when the scores read 2-1 in favour of Punjab, it was Ram Lakhan who dodged past Varinder to bag the third singles and a coveted 3-1 win for Punjab.

Earlier, fancied Punjab barged into the team championship final by beating Bombay Reliance 3-0. Mohammad Salim proved too good for Umesh Joshi of Bombay Reliance in the first singles match by winning in straight games 15-2, 15-2.

Former junior Punjab champion Sahil Arora also excelled in all departments of the game and beat Naveen at 15-1, 15-2 and gave his team a comfortable 2-0 lead.

In the doubles, Navdeep Singh, son of former Chief National Badminon Coach, NIS, Mr Pitamber Singh, in partnership with Sandeep trounced Raghav and Vijay Nair 15-4, 15-6.

Hosts Haryana had beaten Madhya Pradesh to make it to the final.

Punjab b Bombay Reliance 3-0 (Mohammad Salim b Umesh Joshi 15-2, 15-2, Sahil b Naveen 15-1, 15-2, Navdeep Singh and Sandeep b Raghav and Vijay Nair 15-4, 15-6).

Quarter finals: BBMB b Chattisgarh 3-0 (Gurpreet b CK Sal 15-8, 17-15, Vipan b Roop Bijoria 15-3, 15-3, Arun and Vipan b SK Gaekwad and Roop Bijoria 15-3, 15-2).

Bombay Reliance b AP Transco 3-1 (Vijay Nair b Sreedhar 15-4, 15-4, Vivek Patel lost to Sridhar Kumar 11-15, 5-15, Raghav and Vijay Nair b Sreedhar and Sridhar Kumar 13-15, 15-6, 15-8, Raghav Bhosle b Ram Mohan 15-1, 15-3).

Punjab bt Karnataka 3-0 (Mohammad Salim b Hari Hareshwar 15-1, 15-1, Ram Lakhan bt Manjunath 15-1, 15-1, Navdeep and Sahil bt Nagaraj and Shanbagh 15-2, 15-1).

Haryana bt Maharashtra 3-1.

Sidhu, Ahmad Nawaz win golf titles

Chandigarh, November 26
K.S. Sidhu of Punjab and Ahmad Nawaz Sukhera of Pakistan Punjab won the gross and nett titles, respectively, in the East-West Punjab Goodwill Golf Championship played at the Chandigarh Golf Club here today.

S.K. Sharma of the Punjab and Rai Aziz Ullah Khan of Pakistan Punjab were the runners-up in gross and nett, respectively.

The tournament was played on the Ryder Cup format as a four-ball match play. Twelve participants from each side teed off on the lush corse which played true.

Before the commencement of the competition white pigeons were set free as a symbol of peace between the two countries.

Mr Gurinderjit Singh Sandhu, President of the Chandigarh Golf Club ceremonially inaugurated the championship in the presence of Mr S.K. Sharma, president of the Punjab Golf Association and Gen Zaffar Abbas, President of the Punjab Golf Association (West Punjab).

The next phase of the tournament, a two-ball match, will be played tomorrow.

Shasya adjudged ‘player of the year’

Shasya Shekhar Jamwal won the ‘player of the year’ title in the first annual sports meet of Kids ‘R’ Kids’ school held on the school premises, here today.
Hurdles, sack race, 3-legged race, frog race, cycle race and ball relay were the main events. The chief guest, Mr V.K. Bhardwaj, Chief Engineer, Chandigarh, gave away the prizes to the winners.

The results are as follows:

Hurdles (boys)- Gagandeep Singh 1; and Shasya Shekhar Jamwal 2; girls: Tanya Bhardwaj 1; Sakshi Thapar 2; sack race (Boys) Himanshu 1; Gaurav Singh 2; Kashish Khanna 3; girls: Kajal Matharu 1; and Harmanjot Kaur 2.

50 m race (boys)- Anmol Chawla 1; and Mudith Kalta 2; and Sukhanandan Singh; girls: Megha Modi 1; Anandita Tandon 2; Paral Dugg 3.

New Public School cagers shine

New Public School, Sector 18, cagers bagged both titles of under 14 ( boys) and under 17 (girls) thrashing St Xavier’s players during the finals of Emily Memorial Basketball Tournament held at St. Xavier’s Senior Secondary School, Sector 44, here today.

In boys’ under-14 category, Anshuman and Praveen (14 each ) were the highest scorers for NPS-18 while Garish and Tejasvi scored 12 each for St Xavier’s.

Sonia (29) and Pinki ( 20) were the highest scorers for the winners whereas Prinkeet (24) and Benz (12) were main contributors for the loosers under girls’ (u-17) category.

Piyush of St Xavier’s-44 was declared the best player.

The results: U-14 boys: NPS-18 bt St Xavier’s-44 62-60; U-17 Girls: NPS-18 bt St Xavier’s-44, 77-64.

Sepak Takraw meet starts today

The Chandigarh Sub-Junior State Sepak Takraw Championship will start tomorrow at Shishu Niketan School, Sector 22, at 9.30 am. Eight teams of boys and five of girls have confirmed their participation for the meet which will be played on a league cum- knockout basis.

The boys teams have been divided into two pools and the members for girls will be played on round robin basis.

The fixtures: Pool A: Mount Carmel-47 ( team A); GMSSS-19; SNS-22( team B); St Joseph-44 (team B). Pool B: SNS-22 (team A); St Joseph’s -44 ( team A ); Mount carmel-47 ( team B); GHS, Khuda Lahora. Girls: St Joseph’s-44, Mount Carmel-47, SNS-22, GHS, Khuda Lahora; GSSS-47.

Sigma XI sail into final

An all-round performance by Sandeep Mehta ( 4 for 22 and 24 runs off 20 balls) enabled Sigma XI to beat Airtel XI by 40 runs in the first semifinal of the 6th Cry Cadence Corporate Cricket Challenge being played at Tau Devi Lal Cricket Stadium here today.

Batting first Sigma XI scored 181 runs in the allotted 30 overs. In reply Airtel XI were bundled out for 141 in 28.4 overs.

Brief scores: Sigma XI: 181 for 7 in 30 overs (Balinder 33, Sandeep Mehta 24, Parminder 24, Sonal Khurana 4 for 44) Airtel XI: 141 all out in 28.4 overs. (Vinay Bhardwaj 27, Alok Sharma 26, Sandeep Mehta 4 for 22, Sanjay 2 for 17). Sandeep Mehta adjudged the man of the match.

St Anne’s lads triumph

St Anne’s Convent School beat Sector-16 Cricket Stadium by seven wickets for the 3rd place in the Ist Bakshish Singh Hayer Memorial under-12 cricket tournament being held at the MCA ground, Phase IX, here today.

Brief score: Sector-16 Cricket Stadium: 101 all out in 21 overs. Suresh 45; Anirudh 3 for 17 and Abhilash 3 for 20. St Anne’s Convent School: 102 for 3 in 22.5 overs.

Shine 40 not out; Uttkarsh 13 not out and Sureshth 3 for 29.

The final will be played tomorrow between MCA and St John’s Cricket Academy, at the MCA ground at 9 am.

St. John’s to start horse riding classes

Chandigarh, November 26
Equestrian sport will get a boost with the management of the local St John’s School, Sector 26, today announcing to start horse riding classes on the school campus soon. The school also held its annual athletics meet in senior section.

The Chandigarh Horse Riders Society presented a show. Meanwhile, Abhinav Shama was adjudged the best athlete in the ‘A’ division Himmat Singh Doel in the ‘B’ division and Daanish Singh Sukarchakia adjudged the best in the ‘C’ division.
