An apology for a cricket field
Chandigarh, November 15 This is the ground where state cricket talent of Ranji squad, under-19 and under-22 played. The matches were played on the mats even as turfs are available at little known places like Samrala and Barwala. There is a long jump pit dug up just in the middle of the field which could cause injuries to fielders. (See picture). It was pathetic to see the dilapidated condition of the field where the outfield looks more like a paddy field with shorn-off crop. Sushil Kapoor, cricket analyst and manager with North Zone Duleep Trophy, rues, “In the early 60s, there was time when to get into the Panjab University cricket team was more difficult than getting into the state cricket team, and during the times of Dr B.L. Gupta, the then Director, Sports, Panjab University, the ground was one of the best maintained ground of City Beautiful before the coming up of the Sector 16 stadium.” Mr D.S. Toor, Professor-in-Charge, Sports, Panjab University,
admitted that the matches of such stature needed a proper infrastructure and the PU ground was not suitable to hold such tournaments. “We wanted to shift the venue to DAV School (Sector 8) cricket academy ground but the Deputy Director, Sports, PU Campus, did not agree,” he said. “The field was spoilt following the Indian Science Congress congregation which was held two years ago and since then the ground had not been properly maintained. We have sought permission from the Health Department for using water for the maintenance of the field but due to several lacunae in the working system, it could not be carried out,” he added. |
Flat track to be operational soon
Chandigarh, November 15 On a visit to the school where labourers are giving finishing touches to the hard surface prior to the laying of Polyurethane, Ms Bahl revealed that it was a herculean task. “It all started with Rs 2 lakh given by Mr Pawan Bansal, local MP, from his Local Area Development Fund that encouraged me to think further,” she said. Ms Bahl, already has a skating rink where roller hockey is played under floodlights. The place has hosted the national meet and national camps. She said the Roller Skating Federation of India has been entrusting the camps to them. But the need for specialised speed track was always felt. Finally she discussed the issue with the president of the RSFI, Mr Pradeep Ganeriwal, and other sports lovers. When asked about the design of the track, she said it was derived from various world class tracks in China and Korea. Local architects Batra Associates are engaged in its work. She said the track would be completed by the end of this year. She said the forthcoming National Skating Championship in speed and roller hockey will also be held sometime in January next year on this track. Explaining the other features of this track, Ms Bahl said effective drainage system had been provided for the track having a diameter of 100 metres. Another feature would be the floodlights with 400 lux level which would be installed at cost of nearly Rs 6.5 lakh. A spectators gallery with a glass portion would also be built. Ms Bahl said she was planning to have skating academy and had pinned hopes on her school children. |
