IIT Council decried for effecting changes
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, November 13
“One or two students will commit suicide due to the new requirement of having 60 per cent in their Class XII, CBSE exam and the IIT Council will be responsible for it,” Mr Dinesh Kumar Goyal, Chairman and founder of FIIT JEE, said. “The 60 per cent restriction has come as a blow to 80 per cent of the Indian population,” he said.

He said effective training/ counselling should have been provided to students and also the new pattern of question papers should have been implemented from April 2007.

“The IIT Council should have given sufficient notice before making the changes. Moreover, they should have issued a model question paper for the students to refer to. Such a short notice and no information have created utter confusion among the IIT aspirants,” he said.

“The basic aim of changing the pattern was to stop the growing culture of coaching. However, with this confusion, the students are now all the more running to them for guidance,” he added.

Commenting that the IIT culture was a class apart and the students should aspire for it, he suggested that the students should not worry about the changed pattern of the IIT as the skills required to succeed in the IIT JEE were analytical.

No substitute for mother tongue, say experts
Tribune News Service

Mohali, November 13
There is no substitute for mother tongue for the multi-dimensional development of a human since it is the primary source of attachment with society and its surroundings. This was the conclusion arrived at during a seminar on mother tongue organised by the Adara Tarak, Mohali, at Shivalik Public School here today.

Dr S.S. Joshi, a linguist, said mother tongue was a tradition that emerged from the family as its primary source. In order to learn a foreign language, knowledge and grip over the mother tongue was helpful.

Mr Avtar Singh Dhaliwal, former Vice-Principal, Government College of Education, Chandigarh, said though Punjabi belonged to Punjab, linking it to religion or a particular community was a dangerous phenomenon. He condemned the decision of the Punjab Government to impart English from Class I.

Punjabi writer Santokh Singh Dhir said despite the fact that Punjabi was spoken by millions across the state, there would not be even a handful of persons ready to fight for its cause.

Kanwar Dhillon — trap gold medalist (men)

Mohali, November 13
Kanwar Dhillon and Anumeet Sodhi were declared gold medal and silver medal winners, respectively, in the trap event of the Punjab State Clay Pigeon Shooting Meet, which concluded this evening at the Markfed shooting ranges, Phase VI, Mohali. Simran Maan bagged the women section trap event title.

Mohali shooting range

Shooting ranges, Phase VI, Mohali, is perhaps the only place in the region where the facilities for clay pigeon exist. Thanks to the National Games 2001, which led to the gifting of this range by the Punjab Government to the Punjab Rifle Shooting Association. Though the facilities for air weapons are available at many places including the Sector 25 shooting range, Chandigarh, but for clay pigeon a massive structure and technical knowhow is required. Clay pigeon consists of both trap and skeet events and the machines itself costs lakhs of rupees. In Mohali the trap and skeet machines were actually purchased from Spieth, Spain, in 1991 when Punjab was allotted the National Games, which were not held due to militancy. For years the machines remained unused in Patiala. In 2000 these were installed in Mohali. Shooting experts feel it is high time the new machines are purchased as the present one have gone obsolete and require massive amount of money to repair. — A.K.

Kanwar has also led Sangrur team to winning the team championship. Anumeet, son of former international shooter Rana Gurmit Sodhi, also gave a good display.

Anumeet represented Ferozepore and was joined by his younger brother Raghumeet in securing silver medal in team championship.
