Farmers rue shortage of DAP
Ludhiana, November 3 The farmers said while the shortage of the DAP had become a routine affair in the past several years, but during the recent years the fertiliser was made sufficiently available on time. But surprisingly, the fertiliser has once again been in short supply, this year. The officials in the local agricultural office of the state government maintained that there was sufficient supply of the DAP in the market. The officials said, while there was a demand of about 46,000 metric tonnes in the district, about 37,000 tonnes had already been supplied. The officials said another consignment of about 2,500 tonnes would be arriving within next few days and the demand would be completely met. The farmers and various kisan organisations questioned the claims of the department. A spokesman of the Bharatiya Kisan Union said here today that in case the fertiliser was really available in adequate supply in the district, then the officials must ensure that it is not an artificially created shortage. The kisan organisation maintained that either the department officials were lying or the black
marketers were hoarding it. The DAP is an important fertiliser which is used in the crops for better yield. It is used at the time of sowing the wheat. The farmers said, if it was not available on time it would not serve any purpose after the sowing. |

Dr Bajwa elected gen secy of eye surgeons’ society
Ludhiana, November 3 During the conference, Dr Bajwa chaired a scientific session. He also presented three scientific papers on important topics of ‘Herpes Simplex Keratitis’ and retinal changes in the patients of alcoholic cirrhosis. The presentation made by him on digital photography in ophthalmology was highly appreciated. In his interaction with mediapersons here today, Dr Bajwa informed that the thrust areas during the conference were concerning the Organ Transplantation Act and corneal grafting procedures, which could hamper the keratoplasty work being done in the north zone, particularly in Punjab. Due to more finances involved in the setting up of the new eye banks, the corneal donation campaign would suffer a setback as only a few institutions would be able to get sanction from the state authorities to procure and use the donated eyes. Dr Bajwa strongly felt the need for regulating the keratoplasty work done by the state. “The regulation will improve the quality of surgical success. However, at the same time, there will be fall in donations, which will lead to increase in the waiting period for the four million Indians who are blind due to corneal opacification.” |
