Students excel
: Students of Bhag Singh Khalsa College for Girls have won 17 prizes in the Panjab University zonal youth festival of Muktsar zone. Seema and Aparna Jaitely topped in gazal, poetical recitation and classical dance. Savita who was declared best in shabad singing came first in geet as well. Sumandeep, Jagmeet Kaur, Amrita Nagpal, Amarjot, Veepal Kaur and Harpreet Kaur, Manvinder Kaur and Gursharan Kaur also won different competitions.

Heroin seized
: The BSF seized 1 kg of heroin, valued at Rs 1 cr in the international market, along with a pistol at Mahwa village in Amritsar sector on Monday night, said Additional Director General (West) N.P.S. Aulakh at Kharkan on Wednesday. A Pakistani smuggler, who was trying to cross over the Indo-Pak border, saw the patrolling party and fled, leaving behind a packet of heroin and pistol.

In-laws booked: On the compliant of Kuldeep Kaur, wife of Dildar Singh of Khera Bet village (Ludhiana), the Tanda police has registered a case under Sections 306 and 34 of the IPC against Bhupinder Singh, Bachan Kaur and Satya for allegedly torturing and killing her daughter, Sarabjit Kaur. She said her daughter married Bhupinder Singh on March 28, 2004, after which her in-laws allegedly started torturing her. On October 31, she received a phone that her daughter was serious. When she reached her daughter’s house, she found her dead.

Boy sodomised: A case of sodomy of 12-year-old boy was reported in Sadar Police Station on Tuesday. Complainant Gian Singh of Mohalla Roop Nagar alleged that Krishan Kumar, alias Sonu, of his locality took his grandson Dharminder Singh on a scooter to get him some firecrackers on Saturday. Krishan Kumar allegedly intoxicated his grandson and sodomised him. The police has registered a case under Section 377 of the IPC against Krishan Kumar.

: Lions Club, Banga, distributed clothes among needy children and women on Monday. District 321 D chairman Baldev Nayyar presided over the function.

Competition: The local Arya Samaj will organise a one act play competition on “Rising drug addiction — a social sigma” at BLM Girls College here on November 19, according to its secretary Surinder Mohan Tejpal.

Seized: The police seized 60 kg of poppy husk and arrested Mohinder Singh of Bhatnura Khurd falling under the Dhilwan police station, according to Kapurthala SSP Rajiv Ahir on Monday. The contraband was seized in a raid conducted by a police party on his house. He was arrested under various Sections of the NDPS Act.

Prize coupons:
Lucky draw of the 10th “Krishak Uphar Yojna” was held at a function held under the chairmanship of Mr Sujan Singh Yadav, SDO (Civil), in New Grain Market here on Monday. Mr Manoj Singh of Garhi Bolni village and Mr Ram Das of Kalrawas village, who had bagged the first two prizes, were given prize coupons for Rs 40,000 each to purchase agricultural implements of their choice from the Haryana Agro-Industries depot. Eight other farmers, who won second prize, were given prize coupons for Rs 25,000, while 12 farmers, winning the third prize, were given prize coupons for Rs 10,000 each.

Couple injured
: A couple sustained serious burn injuries when a stove burst in their house at Jakhauli village, about 20 km from here, on Tuesday night. According to a report, the couple were identified as Babu |Ram (30) and Parveen (24). Both the injured were rushed to the local Civil Hospital for treatment. Later they were referred to the PGIMS at Rohtak for further treatment.

Electrocuted: A youth, Anil was electrocuted in his house near Mission Chowk here on Wednesday. According to a report, the police has sent the body for a post-mortem examination.
