These children have “healthy” hearts now
Ludhiana, October 28 But one thing that the two kids had in common was a congenital heart ailment, which if left untreated, would have retarded their normal growth. Both the children were diagnosed with a hole in the heart and partial blockage of a major coronary artery each. The cardiac problem could have been managed with medication and controlled lifestyle for some time but surgery was the conclusive corrective measure, according to the doctors in Delhi and Chandigarh. “It was a sheer stroke of luck that I brought my son to Hero DMC Heart Institute (HDHI) here,” says Mr Kooka Singh, who was jubilant while preparing to take his son back home after a successful heart surgery. “My son is absolutely stable and cheerful and the recovery from the complex surgery has been tremendous.” Consultant cardiac surgeons at HDHI said the other child Abhi was also showing good recovery but he will be discharged from the hospital in the next two-three days. Mr Gobind Parkash was also happy over the general improvement in the condition of his son after the heart surgery. Talking to Ludhiana Tribune, members of the HDHI team of cardiac surgeons, cardiologists and anaesthetists during the surgery, said these children were diagnosed with congenital defects in their heart which was not letting them grow according to their age. “These kids, needing open heart surgery, would have been taken to Delhi or Bangalore in the normal course, but by coincidence, Dr Rajesh Sharma, Senior Consultant Cardiac Surgeon at Narayan Hridalaya, Bangalore, who had operated upon baby Noor from Pakistan, was on a visit to the city and had agreed to perform some surgeries at HDHI.” It turned out to be a God-sent opportunity for the ailing kids, who were operated upon on October 22 by the visiting cardiac surgeon with the assistance of HDHI doctors. The cardiac bypass of both of these children was performed to relieve the obstruction, as also the hole in their heart was closed, the doctors informed. “The post operated course in the intensive care unit was uneventful and both the babies remained in the hospital after surgery for about 6-days.” |
25 fresh dengue cases reported in hospitals
Ludhiana, October 28 Patients suffering from dengue were also under treatment, both in OPD and as in-patients in several other local hospitals, including Christian Medical College and Hospital and SPS Apollo Hospitals. According to doctors in Apollo, as many as 20 patients, including four confirmed cases of dengue, had been admitted to the hospital till afternoon today. With anti-mosquito operations like anti-larva spray and fumigation, which the health department and the Municipal Corporation claimed were being carried out in different city localities, nowhere in sight, at least the Civil Hospital, the sole government institution for healthcare in the mega city, appeared to have been caught napping as far as preparedness to tackle the seasonal disease was concerned. Inquiries made by Ludhiana Tribune from the blood bank in the Civil Hospital revealed that the German make blood component separation machine (for Apheresis process) had been lying non-functional for months together now. In spite of being fully aware that the machine performed a virtual life saving function of separating platelets that were needed by dengue patients in this particular season, the authorities had failed to take any worthwhile action to bring the machine back in the working order. The apathy and indifference on the part of officials of Civil Hospital had left the dengue patients, especially those from economically weaker sections, completely at the mercy of private hospitals which had a similar facility, but the patients had to shell out much more money for the same. An official of the blood bank in civil hospital said financial approval from the directorate was being sought to get the machine repaired while commenting - “you see this machine is imported and getting components to make it functional will certainly take time.” The official left no one in any doubt that it would be a matter of months when, if at all, the blood component separation machine would be working. |
Man gets life term for nurse’s murder
Ludhiana, October 28 Pronouncing the verdict, Mr Lal held that the prosecution had successfully brought home the charges levelled against the accused beyond any reasonable shadow of doubt. Keeping in view the gravity of the offence, the accused does not deserve any leniency, further remarked the judge. A fine of Rs 10,000 was also imposed upon the accused. It was a blind murder case but the investigation revealed that the accused had killed the woman by inflicting injuries with a dagger. Suspected illicit relations were the main cause of murder. An FIR was registered under Section 302, of the IPC following the statement of Lakhwinder Kaur, a neighbour of the deceased, at Division No 7 police station on January 1, 2004. The complainant had stated to the police that she had received a telephone call from Raj Kumar, who had told her that Sharda Sharma was not picking up the phone. He had made a request to meet her. When she reached at the house of the woman, she found her body in her room. Later on the police recorded the statement of Raj Kumar, who stated that the accused might have killed the woman as the woman used to tell him that the accused used to blackmail her. According to the prosecution, when the accused was interrogated by the police he confessed to having committed the crime. Following his confession the police recovered blood-stained clothes of the accused and the “dagger” with which he had murdered the woman. However, the accused pleaded false implication. But convinced with the written arguments submitted by the District Attorney, Mr A.A. Pathak, and the evidence of 16 prosecution witnesses the court found him guilty. |

Ludhiana, October 28 Mr Grewal, who has himself been a lawyer, said here today that in case justice has to prevail, an FIR should be registered against the accused mentioned in the inquiry and they should be arrested before going a head with the investigation. Otherwise their presence outside would hamper the fair investigation and the victims would never get justice. Mr Grewal said, everybody knew that the government would never follow the standard procedure of criminal justice to avoid embarrassment to the Congress. Otherwise, he asked, what was the need for a CBI inquiry when several commissions of inquiry, including the latest Nanavati Commission, have already established the involvement of the guilty Congress leaders who are roaming out freely. The Akali leader said, the UPA Government had ordered the CBI inquiry in the wake of massive protest rally to be organised by the Sikhs in general and the Shiromani Akali Dal in particular in Delhi on November 4. |

Ludhiana, October 28 They further lamented that the poor transmission system and overloaded transformers were further affecting the supply and faults were not rectified for days together which caused a lot of inconvenience to the farmers. Refund sales tax, demands association
Ludhiana, October 28 The association alleged that the government had earlier promised that the same would be released within one to two months after each quarter, but it was indifferent towards the inconvenience that was being caused to the industry as a result of non-refund. Mr Gurpargat Singh Kahlon, president of the association, said that six months have passed and the department is yet to refund the amount to manufacturers. “Manufacturers are suffering heavy financial losses due to lack of funds. As their money is blocked with the department, it has become difficult for them to function. Infact, some manufacturers feel they would have to close their units on account of this problem.” Urging the government to take an early decision on the issue of refund, Mr Surinder Singh, general secretary of the association said , “The department says it cannot refund any amount till they get instructions from the state government.” The association also said that 12.5 per cent sales tax was on the higher side and it was affecting auto parts industry in the SSI sector. Demanding this rate to be reduced to four per cent, on par with combine and tractor parts industry, the association said despite assurances regarding the same the government had failed to do anything in the direction so far. |
