SJOBA golf tourney on October 23
Chandigarh, October 20 The golf tournament was added to the calendar of SJOBA last year. According to Mr I.S. Sandhu, president, SJOBA, the tournament was conceptualised considering that so many old students of the school had made their mark in the international golf, thereby not only making the school proud of their achievements but also bringing the ‘City Beautiful’ on the map of the international golf fraternity. Prominent old students who have gained international fame include Jeev Milkha Singh, Harmeet Kahlon (Arjun Awardee) Amandeep Singh Johl, Amritinder Singh, Gurbaaz Singh Mann. Among the new upcoming golfers, the school is home to Ajeetesh Singh Sandhu, Raghav Bhandari and Amit Bakshi. Around 100 golfers are expected to take part in the one- day tournament, which has been sponsored by Nokia, cell phone manufacturers. The tournament will be played on stable ford basis. There will be category-wise prizes in subdivions divided on the basis of the handicaps. In addition to the winner and runner up in each category, prizes have been also kept for events like the longest drive, closest to the pin, straight drive in each four ball, hole-in-one and the best player of the tournament. Entries close tomorrow with Mr I.P.S. Doabia, member, SHOBA Gold sub-committee, and at the CGA golf Range. |
Rajveer shines in Shivalik school win
Chandigarh, October 20 Rajveer scored in the third, fourth, 15th, 42nd and 45th minutes of the game. Earlier, Shivalik Public School had beaten St Soldier’s International School by 3-0. However, the organisers had withheld the result due to technical reasons. In Pool B, St Stephen’s team proved too good for Mount Carmel, Sector 47 team and defeated it by 6-0. The winners led 4-0 at half time. St Stephen’s scored through Sonu Majhi (5th and 10th minutes), Waris Rashib (20th and 41st minutes), Rahul Chadha (18th minutes) and Manish (43rd minutes). |
28 cars to take part in Power MI challenge
Chandigarh, October 20 After three rounds, MRF drivers, Arjun Balu (23 points) and Karandeep Singh (21) occupy the top two spots in the Overall Championship standings, while JK Tyre’s V.R. Naren Kumar, a former national champion, is placed fourth on 14, behind privateer Sandeep Sharma (15). From the 28 cars participating in the 580 km-long event, 11 are in the 1600 (10 Balenos and one Honda City), nine in the 1400 cc (Esteem and Rally Star Cup) and eight in the Gypsy Class. The rally will start on Friday evening with a 1.5 km-long Super Special Stage to be run in the city before the competitors head into the Shivalik hills for the Special Stages on the weekend. Balu, the leading driver in Team MRF, while commenting on the condition of the special stages, said it would be a fast-paced rally, and the surface is also rough, so the toughest cars will have the best chance.” Local hero Karandip Singh said the lead at the top was slim and he was hoping for the best in this round, being held in his hometown. Vikram Mathais, the other Team JK driver is yet to open his account. |

Badminton tourney: Haryana AG bag women’s title
Chandigarh, October 20 Amit Sachdeva and Ashish Sharma of AG, Punjab, secured men doubles title. Balbir Singh Sharma of Delhi Audit cornered the veteran singles title. Earlier the AG, UP clinched the team championship. Mr Sunil Verma, Principal Accountant General, (Audit) Punjab, was the chief guest and he gave away the prizes to the winners. |
Tennis trials on Oct 25
Chandigarh, October 20 The selected players will play in the forthcoming Chandigarh State Games—2005 to be held from October 27. The games will have various categories of men’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s singles and women’s doubles. Those interested may submit their entries in the office of the CLTA Tennis Stadium, Sector 10, Chandigarh, by 2 pm on October 24. |
UT: no adverse comments received from CVC
Chandigarh, October 20 The communication has come in response to a report “CVC raps UT” published in Chandigarh Tribune yesterday. The note said that no such adverse comments, as mentioned in the news, have been received from the Central Vigilance Commission or from any other quarter. The inter-office correspondence is normal routine and is used to expedite the matters. The Vigilance Police Station, Chandigarh, has finalised investigation and submitted challans in four criminal cases, to the court for judicial verdict during the same period. Some of these inquiries and cases were pending since last many years. The Vigilance Department of the Chandigarh Administration has been functioning as per the guidelines and/instructions of the Central Vigilance Commission as issued from time to time. The various reports including quarterly statistical return, in respect of inquiries conducted by the Vigilance Cell/CBI, quarterly progress return in respect of works, and monthly report by the CVO are being sent to the Central Vigilance Commission regularly by the Vigilance Department. |
