Navtez wins five of eight events

Chandigarh, October 15
The second day of the three-day PTU Inter-zonal Youth Festival being held at the Chitkara Institute of Engineering and Technology saw Navtez Singh of the Baba Banda Singh Bahadur College of Engineering and Technology win five of the eight events.

The other winners were Himanshu Suri of the Chitkara School of Planning and Architecture in collage making, Amarinder Bains of the Chitkara Institute of Engineering and Technology in the painting competition and GNIMT, Ludhiana, in the mime competition.

The function was presided over by Mr Tejveer, DC of Patiala, and Mr S. S. Dhillon, ADC Patiala, guest of honour.

The results are:

Skit : Baba Banda Singh Bahadur College of Engg. and Technology, Fatehgarh Sahib;

Classical Instrumental Solo (NP ): Navtez Singh, Baba Banda Singh Bahadur College of Engg. and Technology, Fatehgarh Sahib;

Classical Instrumental Solo (PER): Navtez Singh, Baba Banda Singh Bahadur College of Engg. and Technology, Fatehgarh Sahib;

Collage Making: Himanshu Suri, Chitkara School of Planning and Architecture, Rajpura;

Painting, Amrinder Bains, Chitkara Institute of Engineering and Technology, Quiz: Baba Banda Singh Bahadur College of Engg. and Technology, Fatehgarh Sahib;

Mime: GNIMT, Ludhiana; Light Vocal Indian: Navtez Singh, Baba Banda Singh Bahadur College of Engg. and Technology, Fatehgarh Sahib.

The other three inter-zonal festivals are being held at the Lovely Institute of Management, Phagwara, Institute of Engineering and Technology, Bhaddal, and Baba Isher Singh College of Technology, Moga. The winning and runner-up teams in each event from each of the zones will compete in the Inter-Zonal Youth Festival to be held at the Lovely Institute of Management, Phagwara from October 29 to 30.

DAV Club, AG Audit enter semifinals

Chandigarh, October 15
The DAV Club prevailed over the Golden Football Club 2-1; the Chandigarh Police Club defeated the Youngsters Club 2-1; the AG Audit Club rallied to oust the United Club of Sector 21 3-1 and the Coaching Centre-17 blanked the RBI Club 3-0 in the quarterfinals of the Chandigarh Senior (men) Football Championship for Choudhary Jarnail Singh Trophy at the Sector 17 Football Stadium, here today.

In the quarter-final matches played today, the AG Audit Club were foxed by the United Club of Sector 21 when they forged ahead in the 19th minute with the solo efforts of Sikanderjit Singh. The defending champions reorganised their game in the second half and made their first-half deficit good by scoring three goals.

In another quarterfinal fixture between the Coaching Centre-17 and the RBI Club, the Coaching Centre scored in the 20th minute when Vinay Chandel utilised a pass from Gurpartap to boot home a goal.

In the third quarterfinal encounter, the FAV Club was comfortably placed with a 2-0 lead till the 50 th minute. It forged ahead in the 20 th minute after Ashwani gave a ball-pass to Jagjit Singh, who made no mistake.

Darshwinder wins gold

Darshwinder Kaur claimed a gold medal in the 8-10 year’s section in the Rink Race I of the Snipers Open Invitational Skating tournament, which began here today at the Skating Rink, Sector 10, in which more than 200 skaters from various parts of the region are taking part.

In the roller hockey section match held in the evening, KB DAV Centenary School, Sector 7, Chandigarh, downed Mount Carmel, Sector 47, 5-2.

Results: Below 4-6:Samarth Bhadwaj1, Abhinav Gaur 2, Deepinder Singh 3. Girls:Simran1, Anureet Brar 2. Boys-six- eight years:Sahil Ashat 1, Ravnoor Preet Singh 2, Ankur Saini 3. Girls:Tamanna Maan, Ramandeep Kaushik 2, Tanu Gaur 3. Boys: 8-10 years: Sarvjot Singh 1, Aman 2, Abhishek 3.

Sandeep, Ajay enter semifinals

Chandigarh, October 15
The fifth Inter Media Badminton tournament began at the Sector 42 Indoor badminton hall here today. In today’s matches played in both men singles and double sections, where players from various media organisations took part.

In the men singles section, Sandeep Sharma of The Tribune and Ajay Bajaj of the Hindustan Times entered the semifinals. In men doubles, pair of Prem Nanda and Anil Arora made it to the finals of the event when they outplayed Charanjit Ahuja and Rakesh Patial of the Indian Express Group in the semifinals. They had earlier defeated Ashok Sharma (The Tribune) and S.S. Negi (Financial Express) in quarter-finals.

In men doubles, the combination of Arvind Katyal and Maneesh Chibber of The Tribune moved into the semifinals. They will meet winner of the match between Sandeep Sharma and Vikas Ghai and Praveen Antil and Lakshman of Amar Ujala tomorrow.

In other men singles matches held today, Vikas Ghai of The Tribune also sailed into the semifinals. He would take on Rakesh Patial tomorrow. The matches would begin at 10 a.m.

DC Model students are yoga champs

Panchkula, October 15
Six students of DC Model Secondary School, Panchkula, brought laurels to their institution by winning two each gold, silver and bronze medals in the Haryana state yoga championships held at Chandigarh.

Kavita Pathak and Bharti won the gold in the 11 to 14 years and 14 to 17 years categories respectively, while Ajay Kumar and Arun Yadav won the silver in the same age groups for boys. Vinod Pathak claimed the bronze in the 08-11 years group while Ashu won the bronze in Taikwondo.

Principal Bharat B. Gupta disclosed that the students had been selected to compete in the North Zone Yoga Championship to be held in Rajasthan and the National Yoga Championships on November 5 and November 21, respectively.

St John’s boys beat DAV School

A fine performance by Jaswant Chaudhary ( 3 for 10) enabled St John’s B team to beat DAV School, Sector 15, by 56 runs in the Eighth Blessed Edmund Rice ( u-11) cricket tournament held at St John’s grounds, Sector 26, here today.

In another match, Hansraj Public School, Panchkula, beat St Anne’s Convent School, Sector 32, by four wickets.

St John’s ( B):134 for 4 in 20 overs (Rehmat 30, Sidhanth 30, Ayush 1 for 2)

DAV-15: 78 for 6 in 20 overs (Ayush 24, Jaywant 3 for 10, Vishnu 2 for 12)

St Anne’s 32: 74 for 6 in 20 overs ( Shine 20 n.o., Abhishek 17 n.o., Abhinav 2 for 4, Saurav 2 for 5)

Hansraj, Panchkula: 78 for 6 in 19.3 overs ( Adhiraj 19, Dushyant 13 n.o., Harshit 2 for 8).

New public reach finals

Chandigarh, October 15
New Public School reached the finals by defeating hosts Shishu Niketan, Sector 22, by 43-24 in the finals of the 7th SNOSA Basketball Championship, at the school grounds here today.

Kabir Dhaliwar scored 17 points while Raman and Amanjot scored 7 points each for the winners. Ankish of the losing team scored 7 points.

In the second semi-final match, DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, moved into finals, beating Bhavan Vidyalaya, Panchkula, by a margin of 66-44.

Vivek and Kulwinder of winners scored 11 and 8 points, whereas for the losers Pranav scored 17 points.
