St Stephen’s beat Carmel Convent in tennis

St Stephen's-45 proved too good for Carmel Convent-9 whom they today beat 2-0 in the quarter-final of the Chandigarh Inter-School Tennis Tournament being played on clay courts at St Peter's School, Sector 37, here.

Roopan Saran Nihal gave St Stephen's a good start by beating Rihal Noorpur 6-4, 6-4. Ramneek Rihal took St Stephen's to top after she defeated Arushi Arunwala 6-1, 7-5.

In another quarter-final match, St Peter's-37 outclassed Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 16, by 2-0. In the opening singles match, Aashna Malik registered an easy win over Divya Sharma 6-0, 6-1. Tanya Chauhan prevailed over plucky Apoorva Verma 6-3, 7-5.

Girl's under-14 (semifinals):

Sacred Heart School, Sector 26, beat St Kabir Public School, Sector 26, 2-0 (Harnoor Kaur beat Ishneet Walia 6-0 6-0, Mehak Singh beat Anika Gupta 6-0 6-0).

Carmel Convent, Sector 9, beat St Peter's-37 2-0 (Iktesh Chahal beat Avneet Kaur 6-1 6-1, Sonali Bansal beat Mehar Anand 6-1 6-4).

Girls under-17 (quarter-finals):

St Peter's-37 beat GMSSS-16 by 2-0 (Aashna Malik beat Divya Sharma 6-0 6-1, Tanya Chauhan beat Apoorva Verma 6-3 7-5)

St Stephens-45 beat Carmel Convent-9 by 2-0 (Roop Saran Rihal beat Noopur 6-4 6-4, Ramneek Rihal beat Arushi Arunwalia 6-1 7-5)

St Peter's also took their appointed place in the girls under-19 semifinal at the expense of Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 21, by 2-0 Kanaupriya beat Bulbul 6-2, 6-0 and Vibha defeated Priyanka 6-0, 6-0.

In the second quarter-final, Sacred Heart School-26 blanked Guru Harkrishan School, Sector 38, by 2-0. Riya beat Amandeep Kaur 6-0, 6-0 and Srtefi defeated Ramanjeet 6-0, 6-0.

Girls under-19 (quarter-finals): St Peter's-37 beat GMSSS-21 by 2-0 (Kanupriya beat Bulbul 6-2, 6-0, Vibha beat Priyanka 6-0, 6-0).

Sacred Heart-26 beat Guru Harkrishan School-38 by 2-0 (Riya beat Amandeep Kaur 6-0, 6-0, Stefi beat Ramanjeet 6-0, 6-0).

Sacred Heart, St Stephen’s in football final

Chandigarh, September 27
The defending champions, Government Senior Secondary School, Sector 23, today lost to Sacred Heart Senior Secondary School, Sector 26, by 0-5 in the semifinal of the Chandigarh Junior Girls Football Championship for St Stephens Trophy being played at St Stephens School, Sector 45, here.

The match started on a cautious note. The first goal came for the winners in the 13th minute, which was netted by left half Kamla through penalty kick.

Elevated by this lead, Sacred Heart girls mounted pressure and scored the second goal in the 15th minute through right striker Divya Sharma. The third goal was again netted by Divya in 22nd minute.

The other two goals came after the lemon break. The scorers were Tanavi Bhargava and right winger Neha Pandey.

The winning team will face St. Stephen’s in final, which will be played tomorrow.

Ludhiana college win PU softball cup

SCD Government College, Ludhiana, today won the Panjab University Inter-College Softball (men) Championship being held at the PU campus, here.

PU campus, Chandigarh, DAV College, Chandigarh, and SGGS College, Chandigarh, secured second, third and fourth positions, respectively.

Results:

SCD Government College, Ludhiana beat SGGS College, Chandigarh 3-0

PU campus, Chandigarh, beat DAV College, Chandigarh, 1-0.

City lad wins gold in boxing

Chandigarh, September 27
Paramjit Singh of Chandigarh won the gold medal in the 52nd National Senior Boxing Championship held in Chennai from September 19 to 25. Paramjit had also won gold medals in the sub-junior national representing the UT and the championship of the School Games Federation of India. The Chandigarh team was accompanied by Varinder Singh Dangi as coach and J.D. Singh as manager to Chennai.
