Campaign to cultivate reading habit
Tribune News Service

Ludhiana, September 20
Dr S.S. Dosanj, columnist and former Head of the Department of Journalism, PAU, has launched a campaign to revive the reading habit among the people to help them change their orientation towards life, making it more fruitful and productive.

“In this world of competition and rising consumerism people have lost there inner voice which used to help them in the time of crisis or for resisting any temptation of committing a crime for acquiring quick money. Readership campaign is an humble effort to bring the individual closer to literature so that he listens to his inner voice” said Dr Dosanj in a press conference here today.

He has a unique and interesting method of working. He displays choicest works of literature in functions, be those literary seminars or kissan melas and invites the gathering to pick books of their choice and put any amount they are willing or able to part with in a box kept for the purpose. For him, it is not important who pays what, he only visualises a qualitative change in the life of those who keep in touch with literature.

The only thing he is bothered about is that people could not remain aloof from books and after reading a book they should pass it on to others and thus become part of this “Readership Campaign”.

Dr Dosanj started the campaign in January this year and has offered books to public at 12 different functions held at Chandigarh, Ludhiana, Mohali, Sahnewal and some other places and has distributed books worth Rs 1.5 lakh so far.

He said he was alone when he started the campaign. Now, Jagjit Singh Ghungrana, Navneet Bhandari, Krishan Kumar Bawa, Simarjit Singh Bains have joined him and leant monetary support to his campaign.

He is putting up a unique book fair on September 22 at Gate No 1 of PAU for the farmers visiting the kissan mela where books worth Rs 1 lakh will be available to the farmers at the rate they wish to pay. He hopes this will give a fillip to his campaign.

Asha AhujaJuggy-D

Ludhiana, September 20
“My heart throbs with the beats of Punjabi music. I have made it so popular in the UK that even whites dance to the tunes of Punjabi music,” said Juggy-D, a UK-based Punjabi singer.

He was here for a weekend performance at a city hotel. His songs “Billo”, “Nasheh”, “Nahin jeena” and “Meri jaan” were appreciated by the audience.

Juggy is an up-and-coming singer from the UK. He presented his first “live show” at the age of 14. Since then, he has grown from strength to strength. He came in contact with Rishi Rich in 2002 and the pair clicked. Rishi could see the talent in him and featured him in his album, Nahin Jeena. It was a hit and featured at No I in the Asian charts for around six months.

Talking to Ludhiana Tribune, he said, “Though I was born and brought up in London, I always came back to my roots.

My mother and father are from Lakha and Mullanpur villages, respectively. I love coming to my village.

Juggy said he had been fond of music since childhood. Whenever he came to India, he would take along cassettes of Gurdas Mann, Kuldip Manak etc. Sometimes, he would not even know the meaning of certain words and ask his mother to help him out.

“I consider Gurdas Mann my guru. I learnt singing by listening to his albums,” he said.

Juggy said, “My name is Jagwinder Singh Dhaliwal. I shortened it to Juggy-D. I co-present weekly ‘The Rishi Rich Project’, a radio show, on London Kiss 100.”

His album Sohinye has done well. It was number 3 on Channel U chart and also got a mention on Trevor Nelson’s “The Lick” on MTV.

His maiden album “Juggy-D” was a hit. He has done live shows all over India and Bangladesh.
