It was Hindi Divas yesterday
Ludhiana, September 14 SDP College: Students took part in poetry recitation. “Hindi in Hindustan”, “Let us speak Hindi”, etc. were the interesting topics on which students expressed views. Ms Verma appreciated the efforts of students for their inclination towards Hindi. Head of the department, Veena Singh Maan shared notions about Hindi with students. A creative writing competition was also held to mark the occasion. Balwinder secured first position and Ekta second in poetry writing. In story writing, Jhalak and Nicky Gupta were declared first. In essay writing, Ruchi got first position and Neetu got second position. Students were given prizes. GMT College: DD Jain College: Students of Ryan International School celebrated Hindi Divas. To mark this day various competitions like hindi poetry recitation competition, creative writing, debate were held. |
Instil morality, teachers told
Ludhiana, September 14 This training under ‘Sarv Sikhya Abhiyan’ is for the second batch of primary teachers said a press statement by Mr Khem Singh, in charge of the seminar. Addressing the teachers, Principal Harkrishan Meyer said it was the duty of the teachers to instill sound moral values among the students so that they could become good and responsible citizens of the country. Mr Khem Singh said a conducive environment at home , schools and society was very essential for imparting education to the students. The other two speakers Mr Subash Kumar and Ms Kirpal Kaur also gave tips on imparting good education.

Gala freshers’ night at GNG College
Ludhiana, September 14 Students presented colourful cultural items, including dances, songs and skits, which were widely appreciated. The students sashayed on the ramp with great enthusiasm. Rounds of Indian dress and western outfits were held and the judges gave the final decision after the question-answer round. Miss Vipin was declared Miss Fresher. Miss Manisha and Miss Baljit were first and second runners-up, respectively. Ms Navdeep was given the title of Miss Beautiful smile and Miss Sumanjit was declared Miss Elegant. Ludhiana, September 14 “Each time I went to capture the tree in my camera, it presented a different look,” he says. “I wanted to capture the different moods of nature while focusing on this tree. As time went by, I thought let me bring these out in a book for others to see,” says Sandhu. And thus he composed “song of the seasons”. The Chief Minister, Capt Amarinder Singh released the book at a public function in Ludhiana recently. |
‘Knee replacement best in India’
Ludhiana, September 14 The symposium was organised by the Department of Orthopaedics of Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) in collaboration with Zimmer (manufacturers of knee implant components) at Dumra auditorium on the hospital premises. Dr Vince said the facilities being provided by the DMCH or any other major medical institution in India were comparable to the best in the world. “May be the infrastructure and post-operative care is a shade better in developed nations, but in any case, Indians do not need to go abroad for knee replacement or other such surgical procedures.” Speaking on the occasion, Dr J.L. Bassi, professor and head, Department of Orthopaedics, DMCH, said the purpose of conducting the seminar was to keep an update on the technical skills of orthopaedic surgeons with special focus on difficult and revision knee replacement. The delegates at the symposium were also exposed to latest techniques being adopted in difficult and revision knee surgery. Dr Bassi stressed the need for conducting such CME programmes more frequently. He also apprised the delegates of the facilities being provided at the DMCH for bone defects, fractures and knee replacement surgery. Course coordinator M. Yamin, Professor in the Department of Orthopaedics, DMCH, in his address to the delegates, said knee replacements had been taking place in India for the past 20 years, as a result of which more and more patients were being operated upon. He remarked that in few cases the patients suffered with secondary problems like loosening of the joint, which needed a repeat surgical procedure to change the component. During the symposium live surgery of difficult and revision knee was shown to the participating delegates. |

Camp sheds light on dengue
Ludhiana, September 14 A large number of dengue cases were reported in this locality last year. Mr Ajay Johar, a member of the district grievances committee and son of the Education Minister, emphasised the need for taking adequate preventive measures against the disease. He said by checking stagnation of water around residential areas, the breeding cycle of mosquito could be broken. In addition, people should ensure cleanliness by regular removal of garbage. Mr Johar requested the area residents to go for an immediate blood test and platelet count in cases of suspected dengue, which manifested itself as high fever and rashes on the body. If left untreated, the disease could take a worse form and the patient could get internal bleeding. He said the youth could take a lead by inculcating the habit of cleanliness among people. More than 200 persons from the area attended the camp. Prominent among others present were Mr Meenu Malhotra, vice-president, District Youth Congress, Mr Timmy, Mr Madan Lal Bhandari and Mr Gagan. |

Everest School cagers lift title
Ludhiana, September 14 The academy is being run in association with the Punjab Sports Department and Mr Harjinder Singh Dhanoa, an NRI. According to Mr Teja Singh Dhaliwal, secretary, Punjab Basketball Association, the boys of Everest Public School did not lose any match in the championship in which 20 teams took part. The matches were played on the three-tier system — league-knockout-league. The players of the academy defeated beat Ferozepore 45-14; Jalandhar 59-32; Mansa 64-34; Faridkot 85-58; Bathinda 54-52; Amritsar 111-78; Sports School, Jalandahr, 65-63; and pipped Sports Wing, Patiala, 57-55 to wrap up the title. Mr Rajinder Sharma, Principal of Everest Public Senior Secondary School, joined Mr Teja Singh Dhaliwal in congratulating the boys for bringing fame to their school and the academy. The players were received at Guru Nanak Stadium here today. Dr S. Subramanian and Mr Vijay Chopra were also present. |

Ludhiana, September 14 Mr Inder Parkash, in charge of the school team, said the gold medal winners included Chetan Sharma (below 45 kg); Parveen Kumar (below 55 kg); Sanjay Kumar (below 60 kg); Sukhwinder Singh (below 65 kg) and Rajnish Sharma (below 71 kg). The lone silver medal winner was Navchetan Singh who secured second position in the above 71 kg category. Double crown for Gurbax Singh
Ludhiana, September 14 In the girl’s section Sehar of Amritsar outplayed her city mate Saniya 8-11, 11-2 and 11-6. In the doubles final the pair of Shruti and Komalpreet of Patiala defeated Amritsar duo of Sehar and Saniya in straight sets 15-8 and 15-8 to emerge as champions. In the mixed doubles final Raj Kumar and Sandeep of Ludhiana quelled a strong challenge before emerging champions against Navdeep of Jalandhar and Shruti of Patiala 15-8, 11-15 and 15-11. |
