Excise posts: CAT adjourns hearing
Chandigarh, September 14 The tribunal had, during an earlier hearing, directed the Union Government not to fill the post of a member in the Central Board of Excise and Customs. The applicant, through the MA, had said the Union Government was showing undue haste in appointing the third member. In his original plea, the application had stated that he had been superseded while filing the posts of member in the Central Board of Excise and Customs. The Chief Commissioner had pleaded that despite being at the first position in the departmental seniority list, his name was not considered for any of the three posts which were filled at a meeting of the Special Committee of Secretaries, Government of India, held on June 22, 2005. He had stated that despite having an unblemished service record, he had been denied promotion by unjustifiable reasons to the post of Member Central Board of Excise and Customs. Though the applicant was within the zone of consideration, his name was not considered for the posts. The Central Board of Excise and Customs consists of a Chairman and five members. All these ex-cadre posts are filled from amongst the Chief Commissioners of Customs and Central Excise, subject to a clause that the officer must have a balance service of one year as on date of vacancy. After the transfer or promotion of certain member from the Central Board, a proposal to fill up these vacancies was formulated by the Department of Revenue. |
Two hours of pure fun
An adaptation of a risqué comic French farce performed and directed with great aplomb! The sixth play in the week-long National Drama Festival being held at Tagore Theatre, ‘Salim Sherwani ki Shaadi’- belied its deliberately kitschy look to produce some outstanding performances by stalwart artistes of the Lucknow stage.
‘Salim Sherwani ki Shaadi’ is director/actor Jitendra Mittal’s endeavour at opening theatre up to a larger, mass audience; of creating an alterative theatrical entertainment form. “Theatre can never be classical. Intellectuals have held sway for too long; this is the strongest weapon of the social classes.” The intention here is to make people laugh. “The play does not convey any deep messages of social evil except the age-old attitude of older men wanting to marry women much younger than themselves.” With 13 actors on stage and 10 backstage, the motley crew came armed to present a few moments of pure, unadulterated fun. Salim Sherwani is a much older gentleman who wishes to marry a young girl whose mother, wanting to get her hands on Salim’s money, agrees to the mismatch. In the confusion that takes place at the marriage registrar’s office, Salim marries the young girl’s mother instead! The play then follows a series of misadventures and misunderstandings to culminate in Salim remaining a “bachelor, untouched” in the end! For Mittal, essaying the role of Salim and directing the two hour fifteen minute play, is an extension a passion. Awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award in Drama Writing by the Uttar Pradesh Sangeet Natak Academy in 1999 it is about balancing his zeal for the stage with his bread and butter (as an NCERT lecturer) interspersed with social (popularising theatre through his ‘Yayavar Rangmandal’-a forum of theatre and artistic activities) and literary pursuits. (He has authored several books on plays)! The fire to popularise Hindi theatre burns brightly in Mittal. “North Indian theatre is in its nascent stage. It is like a child that needs to be nurtured. Unlike Bengali and Marathi theatre, it does not have a robust history.” Supporting his beliefs ably are powerful performers like Anil Shukla, Priti Gupta and Sukhesh Mishra among others. Shukla has more than 30 years of theatre behind him with 70 performances to date. The first time he came to Chandigarh was in 1985 with Ram Lila. For him being an actor is fulfilment in itself. Priti Gupta, mother of three, found her solace in theatre and that pathos and intensity shows in her performance albeit her role is a comic one. (She is playing the role of Madame Jembert, the ‘mother’ who marries Salim, by mistake). Sukhesh, who enacts the role of “Patrise”, the young ardent lover of the young girl in the play believes, “Comedy is tough. You need a kind of innocence where logic has no place.” This freelance actor wants to be in Bollywood some day, but theatre will always be his first love. |
Experts recreate Ghalib era
Panchkula, September 14 The akademi secretary and prominent litterateur, Kashmiri Lal Zakir, welcomed the guests, and resented Urdu’s low propagation in her home Haryana. Speaking on the contemporaries of Ghalib, a noted scholar, Prof S.R. Kidwai of Delhi, made an exhaustive study of a mathematician and scientist poet, Ram Chander, whose writings “, inspired
people during the 1857 struggle for independence.” Dr Khaliq Anjum discussed the “Masnavi” (free verse) form of Ghalib’s literary tribute to Hindu traditions. The Director of Ghalib Institute, New Delhi, Shahid Mahauli, threw light on Mirza Tafta and other Hindu disciples of Ghalib. Dr Farzana elaborated on the subject while K.L. Zakir read out a paper on Munshi Naval Kishore, an Urdu poet. Dr Rana Ganori analysed the contribution of Kalidas Gupta Reza, a poet and celebrated critic on Ghalib’s literature. The Education Minister of Haryana, Mr Phool Chand Mullana, lauded the akademi for its contribution to the promotion of Urdu and assured to dedicate the kothi of poet Hali to the cause of Urdu teaching under the aegis of the akademi. Mr R.S. Gujral and Mr Anil Kumar, both IAS officers, also spoke on the occasion. Shams Tabrezi proposed a vote of thanks.

For AIDS awareness, ‘Haath Se Haath Mila’
Chandigarh, September 14 To be telecast from January 2006, the 52-episode serial will feature a young ambassador from various states who has done a commendable job in the field of AIDS awareness alongside his Bollywood counterpart. Interestingly, the shoot for the first episode slated for September 15 is to be held in the city and local volunteer selected after a thorough screening process will feature in it. So far, the trust has selected five such Yuva stars Talking to The Tribune, the BBC World Service Trust said the entire format of the serial had been designed after a thorough research and study which showed that people were more keen on seeking information through such a medium. The project is entirely funded by the Department for International Development based in the UK. It was further stated that the non-fiction show would be telecast on Doordarshan in Hindi. Talking about the format of the show, the Trust said the “yuva star” would be given a story in which he would have to incorporate the AIDS awareness message. It was pointed out by the member that the script of the serial had been drafted carefully keeping in mind that the right message in a right way reached the people. The celebrity status of Bollywood stars already working for various social causes had been cashed upon for better penetration of the message. The production crew from the BBC will arrive in Chandigarh tomorrow for a five-day shoot, a part of which will also be shot in Manali where a tree plantation drive will also be undertaken. Another very popular show of yesteryear “Jasoos Vijay” with a similar focus has also been revived by the BBC in partnership with NACO and Doordarshan, and will be telecast on the coming weekend. |
