Protest rally against change of sports complex name
Chandigarh, September 9 Over 700 members of various organisations led by the All India Forward Bloc today held a protest demonstration against the move at the Sector 42 Sports Complex. The peaceful, but convincing protest, saw the protesters brave heavy rains to make their point. “The decision in very unfortunate, especially in a country like India with high patriotic values. We feel the name of the great leader Netaji Subhas was omitted for petty political gains. What other purpose would have been achieved by the change of name?” wondered Mr V.P. Saini, national secretary, All India Forward Bloc. Not just the change of name, even the large-scale shifting of hundreds of SAI coaches has attracted sharp criticism. In a memorandum sent to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who is also chairman of the SAI, it has been urged that SAI should be managed by eminent sportspersons and not police officers and other non-sports loving persons who are bent upon damaging the sporting environment. Another issue that the sportspersons are protesting is the shifting of the Northern centre of SAI, from Chandigarh, the fast-growing hub of sports with adequate infrastructure, to Sonepat district. Carrying placards and banners saying “We will not allow the change of name from Netaji Subhas Northern Centre, SAI to Chaudhary Devi Lal Centre” and “Coaches are our hope, we do not want to lose them”, the protesters appealed to the Prime Minister to intervene in the issue and stem the rot in the Indian sports. It may be recalled that few months ago, the Northern Centre of the SAI was shifted to a village in Sonepat district and Netaji Subhas’ name was replaced with that of Chaudhary Devi Lal. Maintaining that the large-scale transfer of 736 SAI coaches throughout India, that too in the middle of the session, was an “ill-timed” and “highly-retrograde” step, Mr Saini asserted that the same had led to disruption of the sports
calendar of educational institutions. He demanded that all the transfers should be cancelled in the interest of sport and new a transfer policy be framed. He also sought a thorough probe into the working of SAI “so that sport in the country can flourish”. |
Stadium in poor shape
Chandigarh, September 9 The astroturf, laid in January 2004 after spending over Rs 1 crore, has started having coats of algae and mud on it as it has not been cleaned properly since its installation. The layer of earth, accumulated on it, makes the turf muddy after being stepped on by the players and being sprinkled with water. The coating of algae has started growing due to the mud at the sidelines and even inside the field. “Due to lack of proper maintenance, it is likely that the actual life of the turf will be lessened. Normally its life is around eight years. If it gets properly cleaned and maintained at regular intervals of six months, the life can be increased up to 10 years”, said a technical official on the condition of anonymity. The some patches of the surface got slippery due to the presence of the algae and these could cause serious injury to the players. Besides this, the canopies erected over the player’s benches on the field are also in a shabby condition. The fibre glass has broken, but for the past few months, no efforts have been made to repair these till date. The water pits at the entrance to the field have also coats of algae as these also are not being cleaned regularly. The stadium is known for holding national-level camps and international matches. It needs an immediate attention of the authorities concerned for its proper maintenance. |
