Chandigarh academy clinch football cup

Star-studded Chandigarh Football Academy (CFA) outclassed Mehar Football Academy, Kurali, by a big margin of 6-0 and clinched the u-17 football title for Administrator’s Cup played at Football stadium, Sector 17, here today.

CFA lads made a dominating impact on Mehar academy lads and maintained it throughout the game. It took Sukhdeep (CFA) 24 minutes to score the first goal with header off the cover took by A Shamin.

After scoring the late first goal, the CFA lads mounted more pressure. Jaspal Singh initiated a fine move in the 28th minute of the play. He sent a through pass to Rakesh who dribbled past two defenders and scored the second goal for his team. Thereafter, the CFA lads dominated the proceedings in the remaining time of the game. The third goal was scored by Rakesh in the 31st minute. With this, the CFA was leading by 3-0.

After lemon break, it was again Rakesh who dribbled past the ball and scored the fourth goal without any difficulty in the 44th minute. In the 46th minute, the CFA was awarded a direct free kick and Randeep Singh made no mistake in scoring the fifth goal for his team off a superb banana kick. The ball was dispatched to the goal post for the sixth time with the sole efforts of Rakesh only. Finally, the score stood at 6-0 in favour of CFA.

Later, Mr Lalit Sharma, Adviser to UT Administrator, gave away prizes.

Shooting prodigy aims for Olympics

After hitting the bull’s eye and collecting gold for it, shooting prodigy Gursimran Sekhon has her eyes set on the Olympics at Beijing in 2008 no less! For, shooting competitions at home are now passé and the big gold it is.

Fourteen-year-old Gursimran has brought glory not only for her school, Shivalik Public School, Sector 41, but also for the city by winning top honours in state and national level competitions. She has been retaining the title ‘Champion of Punjab’ since 2001.

Started from sub-junior level, she won her first gold medal in the state-level shooting competition in 2001. In the same year, she again participated in All-India G B Mavlankar Shooting Championship and bagged bronze medal. She won gold medals in the National Shooting Championship held at Indore and All-India Kumar Surendra Singh Memorial Inter School Championship in 2003.

The hopes of her coaches were blostered when she made it to the national camp, held for Indian women shooters in juniors.

Determined to follow the footsteps of her sports ideal, Col Rajyavardhan Singh Rathod, Gursimran wanted to achieve the medal in the forthcoming Olympic Games. “I am sharpening my shooting skills under the supervision of my coaches and have been practicing for three to four hours daily at indoor Shooting Range at Mohali. My sole aim is to get selected in the Olympic squad and bring the medal for the country”, said Gursimran confidently.

Her coaches and well wishers seem also sure that she would achieve the feat. “We are providing all the essential facilities to her free of cost. We also give her full fee concession, provide special help in studies and bear all the sports expenses to motivate her”, said Mr K S Cheema, Director Sports of the school.

Gursimran was declared Best Shooter in the girls’ section after winning gold medal in the 10- metre air rifle event of Seventh Chandigarh Inter-School Shooting Championship held at Chandigarh last month.

Roller skating competition

Dikshant International School, Zirakpur, is organising an inter-state open competition of roller skating and hockey from September 16 to 18 on the school campus.

In the competition teams from Chandigarh, Panchkula, Mohali, Kurukshetra and Yamunanagar are likely to participate.

“The purpose of organising the competition is to promote and popularise the sport in the region”, said Mr Mitul Dikshit, president of Dikshant Roller Skating and Hockey Academy. Coach Chander Singhal would impart training at the academy.

Chandigarh routs Minor District in cricket

Chandigarh District routed Minor District Zone A in a one-sided match by 174 runs and an inning defeat in the first match of Katoch Shield Tournament for 2005-06 at DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, here today.

After conceding followon, the Minor District Zone A lost four quick wickets for just 25 runs. After the disaster, Gurmukh and Supinder played cautiously and added 46 runs for fifth wicket. After the exit of Gurmikh, no other player could stand the onslaught of Chandigarh bowlers and were all out for 109 runs.

Earlier, in the first innings, Minor District Zone A made paltry 87 in 35.4 overs and in reply Chandigarh had piled up huge 360 for 4 in 56.3 overs.

Brief Score: Minor District Zone A (Ist innings) 87 all out in 35.4 overs.

Chandigarh District (Ist innings) 360 for 4 in 56.3 overs.

Tamil Nadu boy wins carrom titles

Dilli Babu of Tamil Nadu clinched the sub-junior boys singles national champion title by defeating Chandra Kumar of Tamil Nadu 25-15, 25-9 in the 33rd Sub-Junior National and Inter-State Carrom Championship — 2005-06 held at Skating Rink, Sector 10, here today. The event was organised by the Chandigarh Carrom Association.

For third and fourth places, G D Ashok Kumar of Tamil Nadu defeated his teammate Arun Babu 25-7, 25-6.

In the girls’ singles, Deepika of Bihar bagged the sub-junior girls national champion title by defeating M Kanagadhara of Tamil Nadu 25-9, 25-5. Suruchi of Bihar acquired third position by defeating B. Sudeshna of Hyderabad 25-9, 25-17.

Demolished

The Enforcement Staff of Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) demolished about 14 illegal constructions within the HEWO Society in Mansa Devi Complex on Tuesday.

A team led by Junior Engineer, Karam Chand, carried out the demolitions, after the president of the society, Mr S.C. Kansal, had complained of residents having constructed garages and rooms in the complex, without any permission.
