In a major breakthrough, the Special Investigation Team of the Punjab police probing into the rape of a minor girl at Nayagaon three years ago today arrested Ramkesh, alias Kesha, alias Panch, one of the five prime accused in the case.

Himachal Royal apple floods city
Chandigarh, August 31
The bumper apple crop in Himachal Pradesh has caused a glut-like situation in the Chandigarh markets, with hundreds of trucks laden with the “Royal” Himachal apple arriving in the city daily. The Chandigarh Administration has made special arrangements for the parking of these trucks in Mani Majra as they had virtually choked the Sector 26 Grain Market and the Chandigarh-Panchkula Highway by haphazard parking ever since they started arriving about a week ago.

Residents rue poor water supply
Panchkula, August 31
Inadequate water supply in Sectors 12 and 15 of Panchkula has affected the daily life of the local residents. The president of the Citizens Welfare Association, S.K. Nayyar, has lamented intermittent water supply registering all time low pressure, especially during the morning hours.

The police arrested a resident of Dadumajra Colony in Chandigarh and allegedly recovered 9 gm of smack from him here today. According to the police, Ashok, alias, Shoki, was going on a motor cycle and was stopped at the Sector 67-68 chowk by the police on suspicion.

A heavy price for giving lift

A Ropar district resident had to pay heavily for offering a lift to a stranger. His bike and Rs 5,500 cash were stolen by the stranger after he was forced to smell a handkerchief doused with chloroform.

Judicial Magistrate, Kharar, Poonam Ratti has sentenced Rulda Singh of Sakrulanpur village to six months of rigorous imprisonment and Rs 500 as fine for violating provisions of the Punjab New Capital (Periphery) Control Act, 1952.

The local unit of the state AIDS Control Society has decided to launch a Family Health Awareness Campaign from September 1 to 15. Under the campaign 21 awareness-cum-medical camps will be organised all over the city in order to create awareness among general public about HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections.

Spiker selected for UN programme
Chandigarh, August 31
A former international handball player Atul Soni of Chandigarh has been selected for the special programme of the United Nations Mission to be held in Kosovo later this year. Atul, who has been playing handball for around 20 years was invited by the UN to be part of the training in policing.
