Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, August 31
Beginning tomorrow, health workers from the city will be monitoring its entire slum and urban population for respiratory tract infections (RTIs) or sexually transmitted infections (STIs) they might have contracted.

The risk of HIV/AIDS increases six to 10 times if a person has been suffering from STI. Sources in the Health Department say that at any point of time, 5 per cent of Chandigarh’s population suffers from sexually transmitted infections. The national average is also the same.

It is to detect the current population for any such infection and to provide them a medical cover that the UT State AIDS Control Society is organising the family heath awareness campaign in the city for 15 days. Being organised annually, the camp this year will cover the urban population as well.

Dr Sonia Trikha, project director, State AIDS Control Society told The Tribune, “We will cover the slums, villages as well as urban locations. We have decided to set up camps at Fun Republic, the Sector 17 plaza, PU campus and the Sector 15 rehri market to target the urban population.”

The campaign will be inaugurated tomorrow by UT Health Secretary Krishan Mohan at Ram Darbar.
