60 attend HIV awareness camp

Panchkula, August 30
A two-day workshop on HIV/AIDS awareness, being organised by the Panchkula branch of the FPAI, was inaugurated by Mr V.S. Kundu, Director Sports and Youth Welfare, Haryana. Sixty persons, including 30 peer educators (students of local Government College) and from an NGO, SEWAK, participated in the workshop.

Dance competition: The Gurukul, Sector 20, won the Folk Dance competition organised by Kandhari Beverages Limited at Tagore Theatre, Chandigarh, today. YPS, Mohali, and Hansraj Public School won the first runners up and second runnersup trophy in the competition.

GMSSS-21 judokas lift trophy

Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 21, won the Chandigarh Inter-School State Judo Championship for Boys (under-17) with nine points here today.

Government Model High School, Sector 34, and St Xavier’s-44 finished second and third, respectively, with eight and six points.

In boys under-14 category, Government Model High School, Sector 34, judokas lifted the trophy with 21 points while IS Dev Samaj School-21 got the runners-up trophy with 12 points. Government Model High School-37 and Ajit Karam Singh International Public School-41 were joint third with six points each.

New sports policy in Haryana on anvil

With a view to promote sports in the state, the Haryana Government would incur Rs 45.49 crore during the current financial year. A new sports policy was also being formulated in the state, said the Haryana Deputy Chief Minister, Mr Chander Mohan, while addressing the players after declaring open the 40th state-level school championship at Satluj Public School, here today.

About 2,300 players from all over the state and Moti Lal Nehru Public School have comfirmed their participation in the four-day meet.

The diet money of the players had been increased from Rs 50 to Rs 100 per day. As many as 20 sports nurseries had been set up in the state, where boarding and lodging facilities were being provided free of cost to the players below 14 years of age, besides the diet money of Rs 50. “A Regional Sports Centre was also being set up on 100 acres at Joshi Chauhan in Sonepat district, where the national and international sports meets would be organised,” he added.

The Deputy Chief Minister maintained that out of total budget, Rs 25 crore had been earmarked for expansion of sports premises, modernisation of playgrounds, purchasing of latest equipments and cash prizes to the players. As many as 290 trainers had been appointed by the Sports and Youth Welfare Department in the state and to promote hockey in the state in a big way, an Astroturf was also being set up at Shahbad and the same would be ready by the year end. A similar type of Astroturf had already been constructed at Gurgaon.

Mr Chander Mohan maintained that government would provide 50 per cent matching grant to those village panchayats who would provide land free of cost for construction of stadium, besides 50 per cent of money would be deposited by them.

Allahabad Bank gets trophy

Chandigarh, August 30
Allahabad Bank has secured the highest rating and been declared the winner of the Best Bank Rolling Trophy ( Public Sector) for 2004-05 by the Sports Board of the Indian Banks’ Association.

The trophy has been presented to Mr O.N Singh, Chairman and Managing Director of the bank yesterday at the annual general meeting of the Sports Board of the Indian Banks Association in Mumbai, according to a press note issued here. — TNS

Football meet begins today

Chandigarh, August 30
Defending champions Chandigarh Football Academy will meet Nawanshahr in pool A match of the Chandigarh Junior Challenge Football Under-17 Championship for the Administrator Cup which begins at the Sector 42 Sports Complex and the Sector 17 Football Stadium here tomorrow.

As many as 12 teams from all over the country will participate in the championship. The teams have been divided into two pools. The pool A consist of Chandigarh Football Academy, Nawanshahr Football Club, Goa Football Association, Gurdaspur Football Club and Mehar Football Academy of Kurali. In the pool B the teams will be Sports Authority of India, Kolkata, Youth Football Club, Club Rurka Kalan, St Stephen’s Football Academy, DDA Football Academy, New Delhi, Coaching Centre Ambala and Ryan’s Football Academy of New Delhi. Mr S.K. Sandhu, Chandigarh Finance and Sports Secretary, will inaugurate the championship tomorrow at 5.30 pm.

The matches will be played as per the latest rules of the All India Football Federation.

Piyush, Bhanu to lead city carrom teams

Piyush Sood of St Kabir, Sector 26, and Bhanu Sadana of St Joseph, Sector 44, will lead the Chandigarh team in the 33rd Sub-junior National and Inter State Carrom Championship from September 1 to 6 to be held at the Skating Rink, Sector 10, here. The championship will be organised by the Chandigarh Carrom Association.

The following are the other team members: (Boys) - Raj Kumar, Hassan, Shaqib, Muddasar Nazar, Sushant Sethi, Arish and Ayush Hemdan; and girls - Farheen, Kudrat, Surbhi, Tanya, Samridhi, Shaiyna Kapoor and Ankita.

Swimming trials

The District Swimming Association will hold swimming trials for both men women sections at the swimming pool of the Gymkhana Club at 4 pm tomorrow.

All interested swimmers of Panchkula district should report at the Gymkhana Club, Sector 3, at 3.30 p.m. tomorrow.

2 cops suspended

Chandigarh, August 30
The Senior Superintendent of the Chandigarh police today placed under suspension Mani Majra SHO Dhan Raj Sharma’s driver Rajesh Kumar and gunman Sat Narayan for allegedly harassing a Mani Majra-based hotelier late last night by demanding financial favours from him.

A spokesman for the Chandigarh police stated that the suspension orders were issued by the SSP. A departmental inquiry had been ordered against the duo and they were transferred to the Police Lines in Sector 26 with immediate effect.

The sources in the police said both the accused reportedly went to Himachal Hotel at Motor Market in Mani Majra around midnight. The owner of the hotel, Mr Jagdish Kumar, reported the incident to the police alleging that Rajesh Kumar and Sat Narayan in an inebriated condition entered the hotel premises for carrying out ‘inspections’. They allegedly began questioning the guests and when Mr Vicky Kumar, Manager of the hotel, intervened, they threatened him with dire consequences. Both the cops demanded money from them. The drama went on for over two hours.

Mr Jagdish added that after this they locked the drunken cops in a room and called the police. The police took them away in its vehicle.

Admn plans drive against corruption

The Vigilance Department of the Chandigarh Administration has decided to launch an intensive anti-corruption drive. It has decided to take strict action against any officer found involved in corrupt practices.

A press note of the Vigilance Department here said today that all heads of the department had been directed to keep a vigil in this regard and take action against officials found indulging in corrupt practices in a time-bound manner. The Administration also urged the people of the city to extend their cooperation in the drive.

The press note asked people to come forward with complaints to the Vigilance Department either in writing or in person against any officer or official of the Chandigarh Administration or any official on deputation to the UT.

The information related to corruption can be sent through registered post to Mr Krishan Mohan, Home Secretary-cum-Chief Vigilance Officer.
