ICLCL clinches cricket title

An excellent all-round performance by Gurinder Saini (52 runs and 3 for 22) helped ICL Certifications Limited, Panchkula, to defeat the Prudential Cricket Club by single run in an exciting match at the Government Model School, Sector 19 here. With this win, ICL has also lifted the third Annual Talwar Trophy

Batting first, ICLCL scored 193 for four in stipulated 25 overs. Amandeep Saggu bolstered ICLCL innings with a brilliant 65 in just 51 balls.

Prudential were given a good start by Manav Asopa (37) and Kulwinder (25) and they scored 52 runs in just five overs. However, after the fall of Kulwinder, Prudential were bundled out for 192 in 25 overs. Prudential Club required nine runs for win in the last over. However, they fell short by one run.

Gurinder Saini and Amandeep Saggu were adjudged the best all-rounder and the best batsman, respectively. Kulwinder Romi (Prudential) and Sumit Kamboj (ICLCL) were declared the best bowler and the best wicket-keeper, respectively.

Brief scores: ICLCL, Panchkula: 193 for four in 25 overs (Amandeep Saggu 65, Gurinder Saini 52, Rajiv Nayyar 50); and Prudential Club: 192 in 25 overs (Manav Asopa 37, Vikram 33, Kulwinder 25, Gurinder Saini 3 for 22).

Tennis tourney

The three-day Ace of Aces Total Tennis Tournament, which was scheduled to start from September 2 at Mount Carmel Total Tennis Academy, has been postponed till further date. This was stated by Mr Devender Kapoor, Director, Total Tennis, here on Monday.

Bhaura wins main bout

Chandigarh, August 29
Harmesh Bhaura of Delhi won the main bout after beating Amarjit Singh of Sirsa in the wrestling competitions, organised by the Guga Madi Committee and Gram Panchayat, Dadu Majra, at Guru Dronacharya Stadium of the village today.

Over 200 wrestlers from different ‘akharas’ of different places like Rouni, Malikpur, Palsora, Kumbra and Panchkula participated in the competition.

The winners were given cash prizes by the committee. Mr Satya Pal Jain, former MP, was the chief guest. ‘Hind Kesri’ Chandi Ram was also present on the occasion.

SD School, DAV-8 for title clash

The host S.D. Public School, Sector 32, beat DAV School, Sector 15, by 42-28 (Boys’ category) in the semifinals of the 6th Pandit Mohan Lal Memorial Basketball Tournament here today.

In the second semifinal, DAV Senior Secondary School-8 defeated New Public School-18 by 57-44.

In Girls’ category, Carmel Convent-9 got the better of S D Public School-32 by 18-05.

The other results are: New Public School-18 b St. Xavier School-44 by 54-10; St Annes’ School-32 b Govt Model Sr Sec School-18 by 31-27; Sacred Heart School-26 b St Annes’ by 21-14; and Dev Samaj School b GMSSS-46 by 20-06. The final match will be played tomorrow at 5 p.m.

Soccer meet from September 2

Chandigarh, August 29
The Chandigarh Sub-Junior Girls Under-17 Football Championship for the Shivalik Trophy will begin on September 2 at Shivalik Public School, Sector 41, here. Eight girls’ teams of different schools of the city will take part in the tournament.

The teams will be divided into two groups. The teams are: Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 10; Shivalik Public School, Sector 41; Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 46; St Xavier’s Senior Secondary School-44, St Stephen’s School, Sector 45, Government Girls Secondary School, Sector 23; Sacred Heart School, Sector 26; and Carmel Convent, Sector 9.

The final will be conducted on September 5.

Canara Bank win by 30 runs

Superb batting performance by Rampal Raghav (52 off 48) enable Canara Bank to beat Airtel XI by 30 runs in the Tata-Indicom Cup League Cricket Tournament at Cricket Stadium, Sector 3, here today.

Canara Bank made 139 for nine in 25 overs but the target could not be achieved by Airtel and was bundled out at 109.

Brief score: Canara Bank - 139 for 9 wickets in 25 overs (Rampal Raghav 52, Rajesh 18, Imran Khan 4 for 18, Alok Sharma 2 for 23); and Airtel XI - 109 all out (Yudhvir 29, Imran Khan 26, Charan Dass 3 for 11, Ram Parkash 2 for 13).

Run-for-fun contest

Chandigarh, August 29
Over 300 children from various schools and training centres took part in the Run-for-Fun competition, organised by the Sports Journalists Association (SJA) of Chandigarh in collaboration with the Chandigarh Sports Department today.

This was to commemorate the 100th birth anniversary of hockey wizard Dhyan Chand.
