‘Restrict CGHS dispensary to pensioners alone’ Chandigarh, August 27 The committee has also urged the government to issue orders to restrict the coverage of the CGHS dispensary to pensioners only. It has been pointed out that action should be taken against the erring officers as irregularities and malfunctioning of the dispensary have been repeatedly highlighted in the media. The situation has gone from bad to worse and the sufferers are none other than Central Government employees from whose salaries funds are deducted every month, without extending any facility to them. The association has time and again pointed out that cheap and substandard medicines were being supplied to thousands of beneficiaries under the CGHS. The grave irregularity had been pointed out by a subcommittee, constituted under the coordination committee, to asses the functioning of the dispensary. The subcommittee had pointed out that medicines prescribed by the doctor were not clearly indented to the chemist by the paramedical staff and the patients had to pay repeated visits to the dispensary to get the medicine. Other complaints regarding the “indifferent” attitude of the staff keep pouring in before the members of the coordination committee. The findings of the subcommittee were also sent to the Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare stating that the “coverage of the CGHS should be restricted to the pensioners till it accomplishes full infrastructure in terms to adequate staff and dispensaries”. Headed by Mr L.K. Puri, Chief Post Master General, Punjab Circle, the committee had demanded that the patients should be allowed to avail themselves of medical facilities directly from the PGI and other government-run hospitals. The amount for medicines purchased from the open market should be reimbursed on the Delhi pattern. It was pointed out that the alternative systems of medicines should also be included in the CGHS panel. More diagnostic centres should be authorised to do the job, said the report. |

Every third death in Chandigarh is due to heart disease and every second person above the age of 30 is suffering from high blood pressure. Such high rate of this group of diseases is due to four major risk factors: lack of physical activity, improper dietary habits, tobacco and alcohol use. All of these risk factors are easily modifiable and hence heart diseases can be prevented. Controlling of weight and maintaining a healthy shape helps to reduce the risk of heart diseases and stroke. |
