10 players of hockey academy selected for camp
Chandigarh, August 19 The Indian Hockey Federation (IHF), in an effort to prepare for the forthcoming Asia Cup, launched a talent-hunt programme for which selection trials were conducted at Surjit Singh Memorial Hockey Stadium, Jalandhar, on August 17. The selected ones will be considered for the coming Indian junior preparatory camp. In the trials, various teams from Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, and Chandigarh participated. Those selected are Dharamvir Singh, Harmanpreet Singh, Simrandeep Singh, Ranjodh Singh, Rupinderpal Singh, Dupinderpal Singh, Sandeep Singh, Preet Inder Singh and Suminder Singh. The local coach, Jasbir Bajwa, who has been training them since the inception of the Chandigarh Hockey Academy is all praise for them. “All have been working hard and performing consistently,” Jasbir said. “All are equally good in their respective areas. Ranjodh is a sharp-minded player and is good at distribution and master in making the game strategy. Dharamvir justifies the three Ss which means speed, skill and score. The left half Preet Inder Singh has good knowledge of distribution and is good at manipulating the situation at a given time. The combination of the trio is an asset to the team,” Jasbir opines. “Proper emphasis is laid on the physical fitness of the trainees. Sand running, weight training and stair exercises are part of the fitness schedule to improve their flexibility and increase their stamina,” Jasbir says. The relaying of Astroturf at 42 Sports Complex was a great help to the trainees as all ‘A’ grade matches are played on Astroturf. “So they are being given lessons in skills, goalkeeping, penalty corner conversion techniques, conversion of strokes, long corner and out of dee shots etc, on the turf,” he said. |
Rural sports meet from today
Chandigarh, August 19 According to Mr Jasvir Singh, general secretary of the Azad Sports Society, which is organising this meet in association with Panchayat Dadumajra, this tournament is likely to be witnessed by more than 10,000 people are expected to take part. Mr Jasvir told that volleyball smashing and boys athletics event are the other highlights of the tournament. Another important feature of the tournament is free langer for the participants and the spectators. He said the arrangements for the stay of the outstation sportspersons has also been made. The cash prizes will also be awarded to the position holders in all the events. Mr Pawan Bansal, MP, Chandigarh, and Mr Jagmeet Brar will grace the occasion tomorrow. Tennis trials: The AITA Women’s Inter-State Tennis Tournament for this year will be held at Gurgaon from September 5 to September 10. Chandigarh players will also participate in this championship. The Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association will hold the trials for the selection of the team consisting of three players on August 24. The women tennis players eligible to participate in the trials should report at the CLTA Tennis Stadium, Sector 10, Chandigarh, on August 24 at 8 am. The players should produce their ITN card at the time of trials. |
SD College-32 bags yoga title
Chandigarh, August 19 SD College defeated DAV College, Abohar, breaking their 11years’ old record and secured 404.1 points. Munish Kumar was adjudged the Best Yogi Raj of SD College for the year 2005-06, while three players of same college, Munish Kumar, Manjit Kumar and Ashish Kumar, were selected for the All-India Inter-Varsity Yoga Championship to be held at Udaipur (Rajasthan). MCM girls win The MCM DAV College for Women won the Panjab University Inter-College Yoga A-Division (Women) Championship with 415.2 points held at MCM DAV College, Sector 36, here today. The Government College for Girls, Sector 42, remained at the second position with 387 points while Panjab University campus got the third position with 371.2 points. Ball pool meet Vishal Sabu defeated Amar Benipal (5-3) in the Haryana state 9- Ball Pool Ranking Tournament being played at Asia Billiards, Sector 34, here, today. The SAI will provide free facilities such as board and lodging, training, sports kits, equipment, competition exposure at domestic and international competitions as well as insurance cover to the selected candidates. The competition will be organised by Choi Kwang-Do Martial Art International (India). Chandigarh, August 19 The second phase of e-governance is being implemented by the Administration after the highly successful and effective e-Sampark Project. Mr Krishan Mohan, Home Secretary, Mr S.K. Sandhu, Finance Secretary, Mr Jasbir Singh Bir, MD of CITCO, Mr Amar Nath, Chief Executive Officer of the Chandigarh Housing Board, and Mr V.K. Bhardwaj, Chief Engineer, besides others, were present at the meeting. The Jan Sampark Project envisages automation of all departments of the Administration and uploading of information on websites. This information would also be available through Jan Sampark centres to be set up in each sectors and each village of Chandigarh. The National Informatics Centre is providing technical support for the project and has already set up a Data Centre in the UT Secretariat with a storage capacity of one terabyte. This data centre is being used for 11 centres of the e-Sampark Projects. About 80,000 persons are using the services of the e-Sampark Project at seven e-Sampark Centres. The Jan Sampark Project would involve automation of government sector as well as private sector so that the common man benefits as part of the IT for Society Project of the Administration. The Adviser directed the HoDs to appoint one nodal officer each for this purpose and to identify key services, which would be part of the Jan Sampark Project and automated in a phased manner. The Finance-cum-IT Secretary with all HoDs would hold another meeting next week. |
