Whiff of nostalgia at Khalsa College

The Old Students Association of Khalsa College for Women was established in 2001 with an aim of co-ordinating with the college and its management.

As part of this exercise , the college organised a talent hunt and ‘Teej — Tiranjan’ festival on August 12 and August 13.

This opportunity was utilised by the alumni to honour 28 meritorious students.

Ms Madhu Vij, Vice-President of the association sponsored the prizes for inter — class giddha competition. The colourful teej celebrations provided a perfect setting for the old students to recall their association with the college.

Teej celebrations

The SDP College for Women celebrated the festival of ‘teej’ here today.

Ms Harbans Kaur Dullo, Parliament Secretary, Punjab, was the chief guest and Ms Sushil Gupta, Deputy Mayor, MC, Ludhiana, and Ms Usha Bhasin were the guests of honour.

A colourful Punjabi ambience was created by decorating the campus with phulkaris, dupattas, daris, khes, pakhis etc. The campus was tastefully decorated and provided a unique peep into Punjabi culture and heritage.

More than 1000 students dressed in bright-coloured costumes, decked with traditional Punjabi jewellery, bangles, tikka, saggi phul, bindi and tilledar juttis, enthusiastically participated in various cultural items like giddha, kikli, folk dance, folk song etc.

Amandeep Saini of BA 111 was declared Ms Teej, Sandeep Saini was the first runner-up. The winners in mehandi contest were Shuchi, Neelam, Raj Lakshmi and Saloni.The prizes were given to the prize-winners.

Stalls of mouth-watering dishes were put up for students and guests and mementoes were given to the distinguished guests.

Adolescence problems discussed

An interactive seminar on “Adolescence and its Challenges” was organised in BCM Arya Model Senior Secondary School here today. A panel of experts interacted with students and discussed their problems. Teams of 20 schools participated.

Dr I.S. Jaswal, an anthropologist of Panjab University, Dr Kiran Saini, Dr Arun Sood, Clinical Psychologist, CMCH, Mr Raman Nayyar of International Trainer and Ms Suparna Khanna were among the panel of experts. They were welcomed by the Principal, Ms Paramjit Kaur.

Dr Jaswal spoke about “Average child labelling” and laid stress upon believe in yourself and try to achieve the goal. He exhorted the students not to go by labels but by their capabilities and discovering within themselves to tap their potential in the best possible manner.

Mr Nayyar spoke on parent-child conflict, lifestyle conflict, career conflict and various problems being faced by teenagers. He exhorted them to communicate with their parents.

Dr Kiran, Dr Sood and Ms Khanna spoke on various career options.

Lecture on railway safety

An extension lecture on railway safety was organised in the Master Tara Singh College for Women.

Mr Purshottam Lal Ahuja, safety expert, who has served the Railways for 34 years, gave a detailed talk. He supported his lecture with audio and visual aids.

To avoid inconvenience while travelling, he stressed on reservation of tickets before travelling and asked the students not to carry heavy luggage and expensive articles. He warned the students against accepting eatables from strangers in order to avoid being duped by the miscreants.

He acquainted the students with various kinds of railway signals and appealed them to follow the safety rules strictly.

Decision on vet, animal sciences varsity hailed

Ludhiana, August 17
The Punjab State Veterinary Officers Association (PSVOA) has hailed the decision of the state government to establish a veterinary and animal sciences university at Ludhiana. It was of the view that the move would go a long way in opening more avenues for veterinary professionals.

A meeting of the central body of the association, held here today, called upon the government to address the pending demands of veterinary officers on a priority basis to put an end to growing resentment among veterinarians. The demands included fixation of vaccine and artificial insemination targets, grant of non-practising allowance, conveyance allowance, time- scale promotion, regularisation of promotion channel, grant of senior designation after eight and 18 years and filling of vacant posts of veterinary officers.

Office-bearers of all district and subdivision units of the association attended the meeting.

Earlier, Dr T.S. Saini and Dr Ashok Sharma were unanimously elected senior president and president respectively of the PSVOA. Other office-bearers elected in the meeting were Dr B.S. Sidhu - chief patron; Dr Gurcharan Singh Chahal - patron; Dr R.S. Sandhu, Dr Sukhdev Singh — senior vice presidents; Dr Nirmaljit Singh — general secretary, and Dr Pirthi Sharma — treasurer.

Rotary Club holds installation ceremony

Ludhiana, August 17
Installation ceremony of Rotract Club of Govt College for Women, Ludhiana, was held and Ms Shivya Sahanan, president, and her team for the year 2005-06 was installed by president Rtn. Jatinder Chawla and Secretary Rtn. R.S. Behal of Rotary Club, Ludhiana (North).

Mr Rajan Roy, DRR from Phagwara, also visited the club for his official visit. Prabhjot Kaur, Principal, Govt College for Women, Ludhiana, was the Chief Guest.

A large number of Rotarians and students attended the function during which a talent hunt competition on dance and songs was held. Lectures on anti-dowry campaign were also held. Prizes to the winners were also presented by the chief guest.

Present also were Rtn Kuldip Singh, Rtn S.P. Singh Dua, Rtn Harinder Pal Singh, Mr V. S. Sachdeva, Rtn Manmohan Singh, Rtn Gurjit Singh Bajaj, Mr Vipan Kumar, Mr Sunil Bansal, Mr Rajesh Kundia, Mr Satyam Aggarwal and Manav Thapar.
