HP link in inferior wood supply suspected
Jammu, August 12 The inquiry is learnt to have been initiated following the seizure of about 5000 timber sleepers that were being carried in a train outside the state. Sources told this correspondent that during the course of investigations, the Crime Branch has laid its hands on some documents that indicate that the involvement of some timber traders of Himachal Pradesh in the fishy deal. The police has seized receipts bearing the name and address of a Nurpur-based timber company. The state high court has taken a serious note of the alleged scandal and ordered top officials of the Forest Department to assist the police in investigating the case. At least five local timber traders named in the FIR by the Crime Branch were allegedly supplying substandard wood to various ordnance depots of the Army instead of the high quality deodar. The documents seized by the Crime Branch indicate that the Himachal-based firm transported chir timber here despite a ban on the import of the species in J&K as it is commonly available here. Timber worth about Rs 20 crore was supplied to the Army and the Railways this year through the Directorate General of Supplies and Disposal (DGS&D) and it is suspected that most of it was of inferior quality. The high court has ordered the Secretary, Forests, to furnish information regarding payments made by the J&K Forest Corporation to private timber traders since December 12, 1996 when the Supreme Court directed that any movement of timber from the state shall be undertaken by the corporation. |
