Dullo supporters swarm city

Hundreds of Congress supporters swarmed the city severely affecting the traffic on the Madhya Marg here today. The road witnessed unprecedented rush on the occasion of the function organised by the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) to install Mr Shamsher Singh Dullo as its president.

Cops take a U-turn, drop charges against Samidha
Chandigarh, July 20
Less than a month-and-a-half after forcing Samidha Bansal to go underground due to the registration of an abetment-to-suicide case, the Chandigarh Police today realised its mistake and dropped the charges against her.

School site sale: PUDA to issue notice

The Punjab Urban Planning and Development Authority (PUDA) has decided to issue a public notice warning those indulging in the school-site sale in Mohali. When contacted the Chief Administrator PUDA, Mr A.S. Chattwal, stated that strict action would be taken against those who either buy or sell any institutional site allotted by PUDA.

The rift between the two factions of the Congress in the municipal council (MC) today came wide open. Congress councillors of the Chander Mohan camp, who had abstained from yesterday’s General House meeting, raised the banner of revolt saying that they did not consider Mr Tarun Bhandari as their party leader in the House.

Three held on theft charges
Chandigarh, July 20
The police arrested two persons on charge of stealing a motor cycle, while in a separate case, another person was arrested for allegedly committing a theft in the Industrial Area. Besides this, a car was stolen and a house was burgled in the city.

Admission fee refund sought from PU
Chandigarh, July 20
Nearly 50 students of Panjab University have not been refunded their admission fee more than a year after they applied for the same. The students had secured admission in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Food Technology in 2004. Most of them had left following admission in other educational institutes.

Scholarships for Malayalee students
Mohali, July 20
The local Shree Ayyappa Seva Samiti has invited applications from Malayalee students in Mohali, Chandigarh and Panchkula for two scholarships. Smt Kartiyayani Amma Memorial Scholarship, which is sponsored by Mr K. Vidyadharan, consists of a cash award and merit certificates.

PMET parents’ body meeting
Chandigarh, July 20
A meeting of the Association of the Parents of Selected PMET students was held here today. It was attended by parents of 87 successful candidates. The parents protested against the undue delay in holding counselling for admissions to medical institutes. They urged that the classes should begin by August 1 and urged the Punjab Government to intervene.

Applications for MA (music)
Chandigarh, July 20
Applications have been invited to fill the vacant seats of MA part I music (vocal and instrumental) at Panjab University. The last date for submission is August 1. The aptitude test will be held on August 5 at 10 am at the Department of Music, according to Dr Neelam Paul, Chairperson, Department of Music PU.

Centralised admissions over

The centralised admissions in government schools being held at Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 23 ended here today. A total of 9286 admissions were accepted in the four streams of science, arts, commerce and vocational.

Muzaffar Ali’s “Gaman” was a classic. Not because it stirred the popular conscience but because it soared on the wings of soulful poetry. Overnight an obscure educationist from Aligarh Muslim University became the best selling lyricist of Bollywood. Sheheryar was born with the song “Seene mein jalan aankhon mein tufaaan sa kyun hai”; and Suresh Wadkar was reborn as a singer. Years after the magical spell which Sheheryar cast with his hauntingly realistic lyrics in “Umrao Jaan”, “Anjuman” and “Faasle,” the poet is struggling to change, lest he repeats himself.

Training programme on leprosy begins

The prevalence of leprosy has dropped from 57 per 10,000 population in 1983 to 1.34 per 10,000 population in March 2005 in the region.

Sector 42 complex all set to welcome hockey stars
Chandigarh, July 20
The Sports Complex, Sector 42, is all set to welcome 26 probables and officials of the Indian senior hockey team. The players accompanied by four officials will attend a 20-day coaching camp prior to the team’s participation in the Mini World Cup Hockey Meet to be held in Amsteelven (The Netherlands) from August 14.
